Castlemaine Secondary College kids were in for a treat this morning, as triple j Breakfast hosts Ben & Liam snuck into their school with confetti cannons and some REAL BIG NEWS

Masquerading as fire fighters responding to an alarm, Ben & Liam pulled up in a big red truck to surprise 16 year old KIAN with the huge news that he won triple j’s 2018 Unearthed High with his ~ fire ~ track ‘Waiting’.

Having already won over fans with his Baker Boy ‘Cloud 9’ collaboration, KIAN’s new single ‘Waiting’ shows a fresh side of this Victorian teen. It’s big, emotive and taps into something real, earning him a spot in the Unearthed High history books, alongside past and present teenage prodigies Arno Faraji, Gretta Ray, Japanese Wallpaper and Mosquito Coast who’ve won Unearthed High over the years. Now in the competition’s 11th year, we’re proud to provide a platform for these incredibly talented artists to reach their potential and grow their audience. No doubt KIAN’s future is bright, and we are so here for it.

triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe says “It’s a near impossible task to separate the five finalists in 2018’s Unearthed High, all of whom would make worthy recipients of the crown. In the end though, KIAN stood out the strongest this year, emerging as one of the most promising voices in the country – high school aged and otherwise. It feels like just the beginning of this young artist’s story”.

KIAN will now be flown to triple j to record, mix or master his music, which will be played on triple j and triple j Unearthed. Last year, as part of his prize, Arno Faraji was teamed up with his music idols Remi & Sensible J. This year KIAN will also hook up with a musical mentor and he’ll find out who that is with Veronica & Lewis after 3pm today on triple j.

Make sure to keep an eye on 2018’s Unearthed High finalists Burnout, Nancie Schipper, The Kid Laroi and yergurl who certainly have big things ahead of them.
