Naarm/Melbourne-based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Adam Katz (of electronic-pop outfit Katz) has teamed up with writer-producer Edvard Hakansson (Mimi Gilbert, Phoebe Go) to launch a new guitar-pop forward project called Crusher. With the announcement, Crusher share their debut single ‘Twice’, out everywhere today – stream HERE.
A breakup song at its core, ‘Twice’ typifies the raw emotion often accompanying a stark perspective change: the moment when the loving home you built with someone loses its warmth and is reduced to a bunch of walls and possessions. ‘Twice’ recalls early 00s emo in the vein of Minus the Bear or Sunny Day Real Estate and local contemporaries like Armlock, with a sweet, reverb-heavy guitar hook running throughout the song against layers of introspective, lo-fi vocals. Co-produced by Katz and Hakansson, the spark for the song’s creation came after Adam Katz scrolled through to a video on Instagram shared by Filipino-Australian emo-pop artist daine.
Adam Katz shares, “I stumbled across this video daine posted on Instagram. They were casually playing this simple guitar line, but it was so melodic and inspired me to write the chords that ultimately became the chorus to ‘Twice’. I threw those chords over a chopped-up drum break, layered in a heavily processed version of the riff, and showed it to daine and they were really into it – which was so exciting to hear. The guitar riff, paired with the down-tempo drums and chords, created this tough but almost ballad-y foundation which was super fun to write the rest of the song to.”
Edvard Hakansson adds, “Lyrically, ‘Twice’ is about that feeling when someone you loved starts to feel far away and you know they’re not coming back, and needing to be okay about that. It’s about when you’re so used to be intertwined with someone and then in an instant you’re not. You find yourself wondering how their day was; what they dreamt about last night.”
Katz and Hakansson skilfully marry sorrow with hope against a multicoloured musical backdrop on ‘Twice’, and with whispers of a broader body of work to follow it’s both a touching – and crushing – introductory release from Crusher.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
