Today, Perth’s Hector Morlet shares his latest single Surprise! alongside the track’s visual accompaniment via AWAL. The bedroom producer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter’s new song is a lo-fi earworm about a serendipitous encounter with love.
Morlet (pronounced More-lay) describes the inspiration behind the song, “When you’re lucky enough to stumble upon love, don’t forget to cherish how unlikely it can be. After gradually getting to know my partner, I was struck with bewilderment. How did it happen like that? It was a night like any other but its significance has grown with time; it’s when she walked out of the blue and into my life. In Surprise!, I wanted to explain my stunned reaction to the memory of our meeting. Much later, when she had left home to visit her mum in her hometown, she called me and told me that while she was sleeping, a possum had dropped down her chimney and landed in her (unlit) fireplace. I immediately thought: ‘that’s you!’ She had dropped into my life to the same surprise – but unlike the possum, she is welcome to stay.”
Directed, produced and edited by Morlet, and filmed on Handycam, the visual accompaniment captures the spirit and abandon of summer in Fremantle.
Morlet has kicked around the Perth music scene for years, pouring his experience into his bedroom beat-making. He gained some early attention on Soundcloud which translated to triple j and KCRW plays for his debut single Picture Frame. Morlet’s captivating melodies are punctuated by tight, textured beats and grooving bass lines and the music derives his inspiration from artists such as Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Harvey Sutherland, Hiatus Kaiyote, Madlib and D’Angelo.
The four piece band that accompanies his live set includes members of Tash Sultana’s live band, Airline Food, Butter and Jack Davies and the Bush Chooks. Hector Morlet sets feature a combination of woozy and growling synthetic sounds, laced with gliding vocals and clarinet refrains.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
