As far as any specific industry goes, music is one with no shortage of clever entrepreneurs. As announced yesterday in The Industry Observer, Sydnesider and former Sony staffer Tristan Berry can now be added to that list. Introducing Viscera Arts, a new record label for an ever-evolving world with a business model based on simplicity and artist control. And he’s throwing a big ol’ party to celebrate its arrival.

Taking over The Lansdowne on February 1, Berry has wasted no time getting straight to work and will be showcasing all three of his label’s very first signings plus an unnamed special guest. The line-up boasts buzzing Sydney artists Moody Beach, Baby Beef, and Dress Thèque. The showcase is the first in a quarterly series that gives label artists a chance to play to a crowd of fans and industry folk alike.

Viscera Arts is all about helping artists succeed in their careers. It’s that simple really. It’s the newest Sydney-based record label working with developing artists to release singles track-by-track and help them build a foundation in media, DSPs, and key tastemakers.

“A traditional large scale record deal will provide an advance in exchange for rights/options over a multiple number of releases,” explains Berry. “Something like three albums over a 14-year period; they’ll invest in that artist and grow them over those releases but lock them into that long term proposition.”

Tristan Berry is no music industry slouch. Within previous roles at Sony Music Australia, Nightlife Music and Universal Music Australia, he has studied the ins and outs of radio and tastemaker sectors and their inner workings to truly understand what it takes for artists to attract attention. and grow a career. The early developmental stages of artist’s career is where is passion lies. Over his own 15-year career, he’s built strong relationships with tastemaker media, and played a role in creating a road map for artists in their formative years.

The label setup offers a great deal of freedom for the artist alongside a “generous” revenue split.

“I will sign an artist for a single track, over a period of time, and if that goes well and we’re all happy then we can do another one, and so on. At all times the artist is free to sign their next release to another label if desired.”

The Sydney-focussed label’s exclusive distributor is The Orchard, the powerhouse distributor and label services company, while its mission to release 40 songs a year is already well on its way.

As for the announce yesterday, which can be read in full HERE, Berry says he couldn’t have asked for a better reception.

“Everyone has been so nice. A lot of artists hit me up right away and it was heartening to hear that the track-by-track structure was exactly what they were after. A lot of industry folk that I haven’t spoken to in years came out of the wood-work too. Feels like there’s a strong tail-wind here and I’m going to make sure I do everything to deliver for my artists.”
