Upstairs at The Bank Hotel, Waywards Ballroom returns as the beating heart of Newtown nightlife. Expanding beyond live music into a new era of curated chaos, the revitalised venue boasts a program that spans comedy, club nights, drag, art and everything in between – reclaiming its spot as one of Sydney’s most beloved late-night venues.

Waywards Ballroom is a place to find your people. The crowd is as eclectic as the playlist, and no two nights ever feel the same. With a stacked roster of events, the space offers everything from the familiar to the unexpected. It’s curated chaos. Real people. Real music. Real connection.

Indie club night Glitch is the new place to be on Saturday nights. A love letter to the MySpace era, bootlegs and pixel fonts, this late-night dance party will blend messy digital nostalgia with rave culture and total rebellion with DJs spinning 2000’s jams and early 2010 bangers ‘til 3am.

Start your week with a hit of fearless humour as Tuesday nights are now dedicated to all things comedy. From the Stand Up Comedy Championships to Improv Comedy Stage Fights, they’ll feature a rotating lineup of sharp and hilarious minds – or take the mic and hone your own tight five. Iconic queer dance night Birdcage takes over Waywards Ballroom on Wednesdays with a slew of beloved DJs and non-stop drag shows. Running since 2013, it’s a mid-week institution and a long-time staple of Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ scene.

Tapping into local cultural and community groups, Thursday nights are home to a diverse lineup of events and an opportunity for up-and-coming promoters to make their mark. Awesome Black will run a new series of monthly takeovers, kicking off with a NAIDOC Week After After Party on July 31, featuring a rotating crew of Blakfulla musicians and friends coming together, building a playground for First Nations talent to test ideas and make noise. Creative powerhouses and drag icons Etcetera, Sour, Space Horse and GoGo Bumhole unite for the launch of Regular Monthly Party – kicking off 28 August, plus introducing Medusa, from 29 August, celebrating our trans and non-binary community, queer folx, sex workers and wider BIPOC fam.

Continuing the Waywards legacy as Newtown’s home of live music, Friday and Saturday nights will celebrate homegrown acts and local legends, with bands and artists from around the country taking the stage each week. Upcoming highlights include The Welcome Choir invites people of all genders and abilities to sing in harmony on 27 July. Next month, soulful, moody and melodic Santé Blu is throwing a single release launch on 2 August before Naarm punk trio CLAMM bring their live show for a group catharsis on 8 August. Sydney multi-instrumentalist tokyo art museum shares his ethereal soundscapes with the Ballroom on 15 August, while glam punk upstarts Wet Kiss (VIC) unleash their raucous energy on 31 August in support of their latest album. See the full program HERE.

Celebrating creativity in every form, Waywards Ballroom isn’t just a venue; it’s a reflection of the community it calls home. From punk gigs to poetry slams, drag discos to indie pop nights, it’s a space built on openness, energy and expression. With a constantly evolving event offering, there really is something for everyone.
