‘Please (You Got That…)’ is the second track to be taken from ‘Mystify – A Musical Journey With Michael Hutchence’ the soundtrack / soundscape to the forthcoming documentary ‘Mystify – Michael Hutchence’. This previously unreleased version of the track features candid in-studio banter between Ray Charles and Michael Hutchence. Fans can now hear Michael teaching the song to the legendary singer, referred to by Michael in the out-take as ‘Mr Charles’; showcasing their very different but complementary vocal styles.

‘Mystify – A Musical Journey With Michael Hutchence’ is the creation of Petrol Records Chairman & Founder, Chris M. Murphy working with his old friend Mark Edwards, the duo worked to produce something more than just a soundtrack, as the name suggests the listener goes on a journey where rare, unreleased tracks mix with snippets of dialogue, massive INXS hits and hidden gems from both Michael and the band’s back catalogues. The album is divided up into four sections; Side A, Side B, Side C and Side D all of which mix into each other giving the listener a more profound dreamlike audio experience than the usual soundtrack.

The soundtrack is available on clear double vinyl, black vinyl, CD, digital and a retro cassette, which is available for pre-order now. INXS have a long history with cassettes; one of their rarest releases is the six different cassette versions of the 1985 remix package ‘Dekadance’. All six together are now virtually impossible to find.

‘Please (You Got That…)’ was the second single from INXS’s 1993 album, Full Moon, Dirty Hearts. The band was recording in Paris when they discovered that Ray Charles was also in the same complex, so they asked him to collaborate on the song ‘Make Your Peace’. Speaking in 2001 INXS keyboardist and songwriter Andrew Farriss said “We thought it unlikely that he would sing the song with us, but we gave him a copy of the song to listen to anyway. To our surprise, Ray said he liked the song, but the key was way out of his range. We were running out of time, so instead of re-recording it, we switched songs and suggested he listen to ‘Please…’ instead. He immediately warmed to this one, and Michael and he shared the vocal parts, recorded in Ray’s studio in Los Angeles in 1993.”

The collaboration between Charles and the band continued when the track was released as a single, with Ray appearing in the video as well as on The Late Show with David Letterman for a live performance. INXS Guitarist Tim Farriss “We’re jamming away, in the third take, and Mr. Charles – he was always Mr. Charles to me – doesn’t have much patience for that stuff. He wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Then, all of a sudden, Michael runs off to have a piss. While I’m standing there, Mr. Charles comes over, puts his hand on my shoulder and goes ‘Michael, I love the way you’re singing this thing. It’s so cool.’ It was really heavy to have to say, ‘Uh, Mr. Charles, I’m not Michael.’ But then he laughed his head off. He thought it was really funny.”

‘Mystify – Michael Hutchence’ is a feature-length documentary about the troubled heart and soul of Michael Hutchence directed by filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, who collaborated extensively with the band throughout their career directing eighteen INXS videos, as well as three for Hutchence solo projects and Michael’s acting debut ‘Dogs In Space’. A single screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York made headlines around the world; Screen Daily has lauded the film as showing that Hutchence ‘Belongs in the same company as Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant’, and that the film is ‘is a more than worthy tribute.’

The documentary and soundscape that accompanies the film could not come at a better time for the band as Murphy says ‘We are entering an exciting period of rediscovery of their (INXS) legacy and a reassessment of their place in music history’.
