Always was, always will be. This week ISOL-AID, in conjunction with THE CITY OF PORT PHILLIP, celebrates the very first footprints on this continent –  those belonging to our First Nations peoples. Australia’s first explorers, navigators, engineers, farmers, botanists, scientists, diplomats, astronomers and artists. For this week’s edition of ISOL-AID and thanks to The City of Port Phillip, we are teaming up with CANDICE LORRAE (THE MERINDAS) to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Candice Lorrae is an award winning Jawoyn and Torres Strait Islander Artist with 20 years experience in the music industry, working independently as a vocalist, mentor and music producer. This week, Candice has hand-picked some extraordinary artists as part NAIDOC week with this year’s theme being “Always Was, Always Will Be”. This theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

To begin the celebration, N’ARWEET DR CAROLYN BRIGGS AM will be conducting the Welcome To Country. N’ARWEET DR CAROLYN BRIGGS AM is a Boon Wurrung senior elder and the chairperson and founder of the Boon Wurrung Foundation. Her work has seen her involved in developing and supporting opportunities for Indigenous youth and Boon Wurrung culture for over 50 years. Carolyn was also awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019 for her significant service to the Indigenous community and she sees this national recognition as part of her role as an elder.

This week’s first musical act is MONICA KARO, a Gunai/Kurnai and Gunditjmara descendent. Monica is now based in Melbourne and works as an actor, poet and singer/songwriter. Her work reflects a deep connection to spirituality through her ancestry and infuses her strong cultural values with her personal experiences of being a young artist and mother with an empathetic approach to life, all peoples and the environment.

DEEYA MITHADDA (DANCE SPIRIT) is a proud Wakka Gangulu Performer and choreographer who uses dance and rhythm as liberating tools through his work to start an emotional and spiritual conversation with audiences. MADI COLVILLE hails from Moama in Southeast NSW. She is a young Yorta Yorta woman who grew up surrounded by music and folks she admired which led her to write her own songs and attend the CMAA Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth in 2017. She was also one of 15 emerging young artists who attended the inaugural MAV Songwriters’ Camp in 2018.

BOOX KID is a First Nation singer, songwriter, producer and dad – Jarred Wall, a proud Ngoongar man of the Wardandi Bibbulmun tribe of South West W.A. BOOX KID creates beats and electronic sounds that are both playful and grandiose. THE STRUGGLING KINGS is a band that was formed by brothers Luke and Daniel Riches who continue to build momentum and make waves in the WA music scene with their full bodied summer rock. They blend their Indigenous roots with rock, blues and acoustic to reach new heights of creative sounds. The band won the award for WA Music’s Best Indigenous Act for 2019 and they are certainly continuing their exciting upward trajectory with ease despite their band name.

LYRICAL INSTINCT is a young rapper from Broome, Western Australia who has been rapping from a very young age. His songs predominantly focus on building self-esteem and having a positive impact on people whenever they hear his music. He has been rapping across Western Australia including an opening spot for T-Pain where he stole the show. We can’t wait.

This week’s curator Candice Lorrae is a member of THE MERINDAS, a Melbourne based duo who are the synthesis of warrior queens. The duo bring an on-trend style of rhythmic, expressive and beautiful music dedicated to their cultural heritage. With the company of their producer Jake Steele, the group’s atmospheric fusion of Indigenous & electro-tribal pop sounds are presented with choreographed movement and slay attire. Big stuff and we are PUMPED.

BUMPY is a proud Noongar woman who presents an introspective view into her truths as a First Nations artist while delving into a world where vulnerability is power. Sometimes moonlighting as the lead vocalist in Melbourne’s soul outfit ‘Squid Nebula’, ISOL-AID will see BUMPY in raw and powerful solo form. DOBBY is a rapper, drummer, speaker and workshop facilitator. He is a proudly identifying Filipino and Aboriginal musician whose family comes from Brewarrina on Ngemba land. He is a member of the Murrawarri Republic in Weilmoringle, NSW. DOBBY is a skilled composer and his music and performances have seen him receive the bi-annual Peter Sculthorpe Fellowship in 2017, perform huge shows nationwide and release a debut EP in 2018.

We look forward to celebrating the immense talent in our country and encourage all viewers to educate themselves on the importance of NAIDOC Week and the story of our nation.

We love that our festival is free to watch, and for our NAIDOC celebration we ask online attendees to help support the First Nations Support Line at Support Act. 100% of the money will be donated to this fantastic resource.

Throwing in even what you’d normally pay for a beer or two at the show will make a huge difference. And we’ll be eternally grateful, too!

You can look good and feel amazing. Artist donations, merch and feel good vibes from isolaidfestival.com
