Double J turns five years old on Tuesday 30 April and is celebrating half a decade of incredible moments, memories and music.

Across the day, Double J presenters Zan Rowe, Karen Leng and Tim Shiel will each be reflecting on their (and your) favourite stories, artists and songs from the past five years. Zan Rowe says “What a blast it’s been, growing with Double J. Some of my most treasured convos have lived on Double J Mornings; from D&Ms with Janelle Monae, to wild rides through Thundercat’s life; masterclasses in song-writing from Beck, therapy with Robyn, and tantric sex talk with Neil Finn. Best of all, the Double J Fam have strapped in and wholeheartedly come along for the ride. What a joy.”

From 5pm, former triple j presenter Rosie Beaton will join the festivities as she brings back her beloved show Super Request in a one off special – hit her up on the text line to request the music you want to hear: 0408 345 555. Rounding out the celebration, from 7pm Double J’s April Artist in Residence J Mascis will bring you a special Live At The Wireless.

Looking back, here are five times Double J caused some (healthy) controversy…

  1. That time we asked you to revote in 1998’s Hottest 100

  2. When we picked the 50 Best Australian Albums of the 90s

  3. When we selected the Most Memorable Movie Soundtracks

  4. When we reflected on the Most Important Female Artists of the 90s

  5. When you told us that the 90s was definitively the greatest decade in music

.

We’ve had a blast talking to you about our favourite songs, artists, genres and eras! Sometimes things got heated and friendships were tested, but it was all for the love of the music.

Honestly, seeing the Double J community grow has been the greatest pleasure. With the recent passing of much-loved artists like Prince, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Dolores O’Riordan, the station offered a space for fans to grieve and pay tribute to the musicians they love. In 2018 we sat down with hundreds of you at the Sydney Opera House for Take 5 Live with Ice Cube; we hung out with you at Bluesfest and brought you the best bits of the festival; and we saw Zan Rowe and Myf Warhurst’s Bang On podcast go bonkers thanks to the community affectionately known as the Bang Fam.

Double J first launched in 2014 with a live broadcast from Melbourne’s Kelvin Club, hosted by Myf Warhurst. As a digital radio station aimed at the over 30s, Double J provided much-needed space for contemporary music fans in Australia. At five years young, Double J is Australia’s #1 digital radio station, with a 5 city weekly reach of 264,000 people. We’re proud to be a destination for music-lovers wanting to hear the songs they grew up with in the 90s and 2000s and discover new music from Australia and around the world.
