Blue Poles, the fifth album by Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders, is released today via Barely Dressed Records / Remote Control. From one of the most singular characters in Australian music, Blue Poles is mournful, sardonic and surreal – showcasing an essential voice and master of musical narrative.

To complement the album release is a mesmerising new video for the song  ‘Susan‘. Inspired by 1980s psychic hotline infomercials, director Leilani Croucher (from Revolver / Will O’Rourke) interpreted the song as someone looking for answers and in the process “losing themselves in the desire to become something else”.

Preceding the ‘Susan‘ video we witnessed ‘White Flag‘ and ‘Feel Brand New‘, which together offer an insight into the breadth of musical feel and emotional complexity of the album. Named after the infamous Jackson Pollock painting, Blue Poles mirrors its qualities – wild splashes of colour, swirls of movement, competing visions spilling off the sides, the struggle for order from chaos. Here we have a musician sustaining an element of looseness, too, leaving him open to whatever happens to float his way.

In referencing Blue Poles, Ladder is also thinking about the polarities we find within ourselves. The separations of public and private personas and the vacuum of melancholy in the space where the two shall never meet. The polarities of love and hate, success and failure. The result is a glorious celebration of absurdity and sincerity.

Entirely self-produced by Jack Ladder, the nine songs of Blue Poles were recorded at Oceanic Studio in Sydney, engineered by Tim Whiten (The Necks, The Church, The Go-Betweens) and mixed in Los Angeles by Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, The Strokes). Once again he’s joined by The Dreamlanders, Australia’s very own misfit supergroup made up of Donny Benet on bass, Laurence Pike on drums and this time the twin guitar attack of Kirin J Callinan and Ben Hauptmann.
