Following their J Award nomination for Double J Artist of the Year, Kardajala Kirridarra has today announced debut Melbourne and Sydney headline dates this January to celebrate the release of their debut self-titled album. Sharing the spine-tingling visuals for the stripped-back version of Warmala (Young Girls Song) by David Williams and Sooji Kim, Kardajala Kirridarra will also perform at Sugar Mountain, MOFO at Mona and Yabun Festival in January, and Perth Festival in February.
Sung in English and Mudburra, a rarely heard Indigenous language, Kardajala Kirridarra has received widespread acclaim, earning six feature albums at Australian radio, praising their ability to meld the contemporary with the traditional. Audiences will be treated to live renditions of Ngabaju (Grandmother’s Song), Ngurra (Rain Song) and new focus track Warmala (Young Girls Song), a story of a young girl coming of age. With cinematography by Stuart Liddell andJoão Dujon Pereira, the accompany video was filmed around Eleanor & Janey Dixon’s community of Marlinja, Northern Territory at the beginning of the wet season.
After their jaw-dropping BIGSOUND showcases, Kardajala Kirridarra has inked a management deal with Ground Control Music Management, home of Emma Louise, The Church, Robbie Miller, Morning Harvey and Darling James. Rick Chazan, Director of Ground Control says of the partnership, “I think Kardajala Kirridarra is destined to become one of Australia’s most important voices. It is an honour and privilege to work with the band and we look forward to supporting their vision and the beauty they create.”
Kardajala Kirridarra also joins Select Music’s impressive live roster that includes RÜFÜS, Tkay Maidza and The Preatures, where they will be represented by booking agent Casey O’Shaughnessy. Nicola Pitt and Johanna Campbell from CAAMA will act as their booking agents exclusively in the Northern Territory.
The groundbreaking collective features songwriter and vocalist Eleanor Dixon (Rayella, Desert Divas), vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and electronic producer Beatrice Lewis (Beatrice, Haiku Hands), story-teller and poet Janey Dixon; and MC Kayla Jackson. Formed under the moniker Kardajala Kirridarra, which translates to ‘Sandhill Women,’ Kardajala is the name of a mysterious bush woman from the sandhills behind the community of Malinja, NT. From their inception until now, Kardajala Kirridarra has won a MusicNT Song of the Year Award, played at Golden Plains Festival, Wide Open Spaces and Barunga Festival, and were the first all female band to perform at the Bush Bands Bash.
