Acclaimed recording artist, poet, novelist and playwright Kate Tempest has released her highly anticipated new album The Book Of Traps And Lessons – out now via Fiction Records / Caroline Australia.
Kate and long-time collaborator Dan Carey (Sia, Yeasayer, Bat For Lashes) worked with legendary US producer Rick Rubin on the release. What transpired is an incredible piece of work that takes the listener on a 45 minute journey of highs, lows and core bearing emotions. The tracks comprise a narrative thread and are intended to be listened to in one sitting. Speaking to The Big Issue recently, Rubin said Kate Tempest was behind a change in direction that culminated in hip hop mogul Jay Z’s 2017 album 4:44.

The Book of Traps and Lessons was crafted with Rubin and Carey over the course of five years. It follows Tempest’s previous releases, 2014’s Everybody Down and 2016’s Let Them Eat Chaos, both of which were shortlisted for Mercury Prize in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Last year, Kate Tempest was nominated at The BRIT Awards for Best Female Solo Performer.
Back to back singles ‘Firesmoke‘ and ‘Holy Elixir‘ hinted to the album’s incredibly open, emotional and evocative contents, with collective praise from NPR Music, Consequence of Sound, Hot New Hip Hop, Brooklyn Vegan, Clash Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit, DIY and many more.

Since her emergence in 2011, the London-born artist has redefined what it means to be a wordsmith in the Modern Age. To date, she has published three poetry collections, one book-length poem, a novel, staged three plays, and released two solo studio albums – Everybody Down (shortlisted for the 2014 Mercury Prize), and Let Them Eat Chaos (shortlisted for the 2017 Mercury Prize). Along the way, she entranced audiences on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, NPR’s “Tiny Desk,” and more. Not to mention, she garnered widespread critical acclaim from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Forbes, and more, to name a few.
In the midst of this whirlwind journey, she performed a passage of her popular 75-minute narrative poem, Brand New Ancients, on Charlie Rose. Legendary producer and American Recordings Founder Rick Rubin caught the show, tracked down her phone number, and made a call. This set a series of events in motion that led to The Book of Traps and Lessons.
Kate made waves in Australia last time she was in the country when she her explosive poem on the topic of ‘progress’ for Q&A went viral, with News.com.au writing that “viewers were in tears by the end of a hard-hitting Q&A after powerful words from one of the show’s panellists [Kate Tempest].” Relive the moment HERE.
