Multi-Platinum selling and five time ARIA Award winning singer and songwriter KATIE NOONAN returns with her jazz trio ELIXIR featuring Zac Hurren, for a magical evening of music and poetry on the ‘Gratitude And Grief’ National Tour. They will be joined on select dates by special guest MICHAEL LEUNIG, who will be adding another element to the performance with his live drawing accompanying the sublime music.
This extensive run of concerts will feature the ARIA nominated album ‘Gratitude And Grief’, a collaboration between ELIXIR and Australia’s ‘poet laureate’ MICHAEL LEUNIG, uniting Michael’s spoken word poetry with Katie’s angelic vocals and ELIXIR’s sublime improvisation. The album, which translates Leunig’s poetry into stunning jazz, has received rave reviews for its unique combination of poetry, art and music.
Kicking off at Adelaide’s Spiegeltent on February 15, the tour will traverse New South Wales, Queensland, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania, playing in the finest theatres, town halls, wineries and spiegeltents!
Folk Jazz trio ELIXIR is approaching 20 years in the business. Fronted by Noonan with Jazz saxophonist Zac Hurren, the trio has enjoyed enormous success along the way including an ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in 2011, 13 weeks at #1 on the ARIA Jazz Chart, and numerous high profile festival appearances. The trio continues to develop new musical opportunities and relationships and seeks to explore the relationship between text and sound, as well as celebrate great Australian poetry.
KATIE NOONAN’s technical mastery and pure voice makes her one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists. The 5x ARIA Award winning and 7x platinum selling songstress first received widespread praise as the angel-voiced songstress of indie-pop band George, and has since taken audiences on sublime excursions through jazz, pop and classical music. Her recent releases include collaborating with guitarist Karin Schaupp for their 2017 ARIA Winning album ‘Songs of the Latin Skies’ and the world famous Brodsky Quartet for the acclaimed 2016 album ‘With Love and Fury’. She has also worked with the country’s top orchestra’s including her fruitful collaborations with Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra and recently with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the premiere performance of ‘Gratitude and Grief’.
Zac Hurren is a truly unique saxophonist, composer and improviser who has shared the stage with Aussie greats such as Dale Barlow, Scott Tinkler, David Ades, Paul Grabowsky and Simon Barker. In 2009, Zac won the National Jazz Award, before receiving an ARIA Award in 2011 with ELIXIR and was also Freedman Fellowship finalist in 2012.
MICHAEL LEUNIG is one of this country’s most celebrated artist/poets. In 1999, he was declared a national living treasure by the National Trust and awarded honorary degrees from La Trobe and Griffith universities and the Australian Catholic University for his unique contribution to Australian culture.
