.

Leaps and Bounds Music Festival has revealed the first details of the 2018 program, set to take place from July 13 – 22. The much adored festival celebrates the live music venues of Yarra and the people who have made the area the heart of the live music capital of the world.

Yarra Mayor, Cr Daniel Nguyen said live music and the local venues that support it are an essential part of the city’s identity.

“Our live music scene is the best in the world. You can see quality gigs any night of the week in Yarra. This festival celebrates the venues, artists and venue bookers who make such a huge contribution to the cultural life of our city.

“Diversity is absolutely central to exciting and innovative arts, and we’re proud to have a strong contingent of female, queer and Indigenous programmers and performers as part of the festival. There’s something for everyone to enjoy,” said Cr Nguyen.

This year Leaps and Bounds has enabled Yarra venue bookers to put on some of the best and most diverse gigs around.

Dijok (pictured) will be part of Laundry Bar’s Girls to the Front event, which pushes quality home grown hip hop and rap talent the fore. Anna Scionti will headline The Rainbow, Emilee South is scheduled to enthral The Gem and Bar Open will showcase cabaret and chanteuses via Femmes on Fire.

Women of Country will take place at The Standard and Our Ting is a special Yarra Youth Services all ages gig featuring Lady Banton and all the tastiest Grime, Hip Hop, Trap, Afrobeat and Dancehall Grumpy’s Green can handle.

Queering the Pitch: Music from Beyond the Binary will be curated by award-winning gender transcendent diva, acclaimed producer, Mama Alto and will go down at Fitzroy’s favourite queer and alternative bookstore Hares and Hyenas while riotous rock den The Old Bar will host Queer Here.

Smith Street Dreaming, Leaps and Bounds’ annual outdoor event celebrating Aboriginal culture and history, has confirmed the talents of MC Leila Gurruwiwi, Dave Arden & Band, Benny Walker, Birdz, Alice Skye, Indigenous Hip Hop Dance Projects, and Djirri Djirri Dance Group.

This selection is just a slice of the superb venue-led programming on display at July’s Leaps and Bounds Festival. This year’s festival follows a recent explosion of positive governmental support for the Melbourne music scene including the recent announcement that The Music Market will open its doors next year at the new Collingwood Arts Precinct on Johnston Street. And following recent confirmation that Melbourne is the live music capital of the world, things are truly progressing in Leaps and Bounds for our vibrant music community.
