It’s been three years in the making, but Australian indie-rock luminaries Little May have announced their highly-anticipated second album, Blame My Body (out May 3via Dew Process / Universal Music Australia), along with a fiery new single, ‘Apples.’
‘Apples’ sees the duo continue the embrace of their new sound – fizzy production, shimmery guitars and thumping drums. With Liz Drummond’s languid voice taking the lead mic, it’s a song bubbling with an undeniable effervescence and energy, that wields a deeply addictive chorus that grows on you more and more with each listen.
‘Apples’ is a song laced with a strong cocktail of darkness and light. Drummond’s vocals move through the mix with elusive and mysterious imagery and emotions – while below them, the instrumentation lively pulsates, bolstered by Little May’s signature, dazzling harmonies and subtle synth notes that create a cosmic atmosphere. It’s not exactly what you’d expect from Little May, a song like ‘Apples,’ however, ignites memories of Liz Phair, PJ Harvey or Dum Dum Girls at their peak – but with a cutting contemporary edge. In other words, it’s exactly what you should hope for from the band as they manoeuvre away from their folk roots into a new sound in 2019 and look to conquer new realms.
The single was released simultaneously with a video directed by Sydney creatives Stupid Genius, who paired an energetic performance from the duo alongside striking images that look like they were pulled directly from a fashion shoot. The video was premiered internationally via Consequence of Sound.
‘Apples’ follows in the footsteps of ‘Lover’ – whose release in late 2018 marked a new era of the band. Not only was it their first single from Blame My Body and their first new music since the release of their breakout debut record For The Company, it was the first release from Drummond and Hannah Field as a duo – after the departure of friend and founding member Annie Hamilton the previous year. The duo are now focused on retaining the brilliant form that made them one of Australia’s most-loved and critically acclaimed acts in recent years, while also reflecting the dark and seductive energy that first drew them millions of listeners around the world.
Little May have one of the most storied careers in contemporary Australian music. Started by high school friends home-recording their shared passion for singing, playing and writing together, they now boast more than 110 million online streams, and have performed on some of the world’s biggest stages – from local festivals like Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival and Laneway, through to supporting the likes of Mumford & Sons, The National, City & Color, and The Vaccines.
Having recently made a triumphant return to the stages of Falls, not to mention finishing up a 16-date national tour in support of The Rubens, Little May are now poised to perform a string of solo, headline concerts this February. These East Coast performances will unleash a new live show that boasts power and volume alongside great songs and a sneak preview of what is to come.
