Maddy Jane’s gift: cutting through the bullshit and telling it how it is. She credits this special ability to her small-town upbringing – growing up on Bruny Island off the wild and unforgiving coast of Tasmania: an island, off an island, off an island. Population: 600. With the release today of her aptly titled new work, ISLAND TIME EP, this raw and poetic collection of songs shares Maddy’s journey returning to her hometown of Bruny Island for the last few years, highlighting the irony, dark humour and the slight sense of fear that comes with ending up exactly where you started. “Coming to Bruny has forced me to go back to what is truly me and to understand what’s truly important,” she explains.

Featuring the previously released ‘Island Time’, ‘It’s A Lot’ as well as ‘You Wouldn’t Get Along With My Mum’, ISLAND TIME also introduces the new single ‘Eddie’ with its video shot in Northern NSW with videographer Tas Wilson (Ruby Fields, Pacific Avenue, Adam Newling) who brought Maddy’s early 2000’s vision to life. Tas shares, “That era of music videos is just so iconic and also absurd, I love it, so that got me super hyped. I felt the lyrics were really breaking out of a box metaphorically so thought why not do it physically too. So we took that premise and ran with it. The Eddie room being this kind of visual metaphor for confronting all the head noise.”
“’Eddie’ is my early 2000s, No Doubt, Alanis Morrisette, bored and angry moment of this EP,” explains Maddy. “Sexism is getting so old, I don’t care what you think, or about these stupid comments I’m hearing all the time, but I care so much about the cause and awareness. It’s that juxtaposition of caring and not giving a fuck. What it is to be a woman, strong and caring. It’s so mundane and common to hear subtle sexist comments or be mansplained at about something.
“’Eddie’ is just a character that I imagine is a middle aged, conditioned, sexist Aussie bloke that obviously plays golf, wears shit Oakleys and is like a friend’s Dad or something. It is not referring to my ex-boyfriend from college, for any friends reading this who were about to ask me, it just rhymes with already.”
