When Mondo Rock Bassist Paul Christie (Party Boys & Kevin Borich Express) came up with the idea of calling his Mondo bandmates to discuss his desire to revisit the songs that they all recorded back in the 80’s and play them live on stage again for no other reason than it had simply been too long since these three musicians have had the opportunity to perform together and that their connection to those songs runs deep. The response to PC’s idea was a unanimous “I’m in” from Mondo Guitarist Eric McCusker (Captain Matchbox) who wrote most of the hits for Mondo Rock and 60% of the Chemistry album, and Keyboard player James Black (Men At Work, Black Sorrows, Rockwiz) was also excited to create a show with a difference with his old friends and bandmates. One of the differences is they will be without Mondo Rock singer, Ross Wilson, who has a very busy solo career. After a few phone calls The Chemistry was conceived.
James Black said “The idea of revisiting the time when we made the Chemistry album at the start of the 80’s and talking about what happened behind the scenes in the studio really appeals to me and I am happy to get on board to do it. The 70’s was a great time in Australian music and in our lives. The collection of musicians that came together to make that album was special. The chemistry was right. It was a time of tape machines and weeks in the studio trying to create something new and distinctive and uniquely Australian. That was the core idea for musicians in the 70’s. At the time we didn’t know It was actually the end of an era. Synthesizers were brand new. It was the time before drum machines, auto tune, computers and home recording took over. It was magically exciting to go into the studio. There were always other bands in the studios at the same time and we listened to their records and they listened to ours. Everyone was trying to make good music and to make hits. I remember the time as a great time for us, and would love to share stories about it and play and explore the songs for music fans”.
An evening with The Chemistry is a trip down a part of oz rock history. Audiences will experience the songs and stories from these three musicians that will include their time together in the legendary Mondo Rock and the creation of the iconic Australian album ‘Chemistry’. You will experience those classic songs just as they were written by Eric and you will also hear tales and hits from 3 careers that cover a combined 130 years of writing, recording and performance from 3 certified Oz rock road warriors.
Eric McCusker said this about the project “”Mondo Rock came together in an unusual way. Within a year of us all being thrown together we had a hit single and within two years we had four hit singles and a platinum album. It was like a chemical reaction! And the making of Chemistry was a real saga.
With this band, “The Chemistry”, three of the original members of Mondo Rock will have the opportunity to tell the stories behind the formation of the band, the making of the record and the writing of the songs.
I can’t wait to get a chance to talk to people about the scene and the personalities and the crazy shit that happened, as well as answering peoples’ questions.
And it’ll be great to play those tunes, and some of the tracks that came out on the later albums, with the people who originally made them forty some years ago.”
Joining the group on drums will be in demand session player and solo performer on The Voice, the amazing Lozz Benson. Lozz is arguably Australia’s most sought after female drummer and has toured the world with a number of our best known musical exports.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
