“the ultimate anti-establishment anthem showcasing provocative lyricism enriched by the smooth balance of pop, rap, and R&B… Miss Kannina is undeniably powerful and it’s clear that she has much more where [‘Blak Britney’] comes from. 2023 is going to be a big year” – Acclaim Magazine

“intoxicating” – The AU Review

“Miss Kaninna’s performance was a clear display of her immense live talents,.. Provocative, dramatic, and political… Her strong vocals never wavered, and the crowd fell at her feet.” – Scenestr

“Hopefully by now you’ve heard ‘Blak Britney’. If you’re anything like me, you’re giving serious consideration to it being on your Hottest 100 shortlist this year. But that tune shows just one side of Miss Kaninna. In her live show at BIGSOUND she exhibited the breadth of her astounding talent – as a performer, a vocalist, a songwriter, and a remarkably strong voice in every sense of the word”. – Dan Condon, Double J

Following high-octane performances at SXSW Sydney and BIGSOUND, proud Yorta Yorta, Djadja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali woman and Music Victoria Award-nominated powerhouse artist Miss Kaninna (she/her) shares break-neck new single ‘Pinnacle Bitch’, a hyper-confident track that serves as a sequel to her buzzy earworm of a debut ‘Blak Britney’, and a reminder to anyone who needs it that they’re “THAT bitch”. Alongside the new music, the Naarm/Melbourne-via-lutruwita/Tasmania artist announces her signing to elite booking agency Premier Artists, ahead of a slew of festival appearances at SXSW 2024, Meredith Music Festival, Beyond The Valley, Wildlands, Laneway Festival, Sun Cycle, HAYDAYS and many more (all details below). ‘Pinnacle Bitch’ is out everywhere via Soul Has No Tempo now – stream HERE.

The news follows an explosion of support for ‘Blak Britney’ – which shot to #1 Most Played on triple j within a fortnight of its release on full rotation, also added at iHeartAustralia, triple j Unearthed and across community radio, with support at KEXP, BBC 6 Music, ABC Radio National, Apple Music’s Rap Life Radio, CADA and a nomination for Best Song/Track at the Music Victoria Awards alongside veteran artists like Julia Jacklin and RVG, also spot-lit as best new music by a litany of media (VICE, Acclaim Magazine, Rolling Stone – Song You Need To Know, The AU Review – Track of the Week, Music Feeds, AUD’$, The Music and more). With further accolades via Beat Magazine, Pilerats, Ramona Magazine, Best Before and a host of others, the release saw her tagged as triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and, more recently, grace the cover of Hobart Magazine and has been streamed over 320k times across DSPs with Spotify and Apple Music playlist additions across the hybrid (cover), New Music Friday AU & NZ, hot girl sh*t, The Drip, Beats n’ Bears, The Local List, Wildflower, The Sound and more.

Now Miss Kaninna steps forward to beckon us further into her world of “Blak pop”, one underpinned by unashamed authenticity, truth, and intensity.

A relentless cut that immediately grabs you by the throat and won’t let go, ‘Pinnacle Bitch’ is a club-ready call-to-arms: one for anyone who’s ever felt the sting of others trying to bring them down, simply for being themselves, to reconnect with the “baddie” within. Celebrating subversion and the freedom to be your genuine self – something Miss Kaninna embodies across everything she does – the track’s first verse was penned during a time when she felt under-appreciated and challenged, taking on new life after the reaction to ‘Blak Britney’ buoyed her confidence. It’s on full display via ‘Pinnacle Bitch’, with the formidable artist taking her clear vision for the track – including a sickening, squelchy acid bassline which gives way to big, booming 808s and chopped-up chorus vocals in half-time and plenty of flippant ad-libs – to Finn Rees (30/70, Close Counters) for further development, with deftly vicious additional production from Jacob Farah (Dallas Woods, Jerome Farah, Baker Boy) that knows exactly where to pull back for Miss Kaninna and her unshakeable bars to take centre stage.

Miss Kaninna says: “I wrote this song when I had people wishing bad on me and talking shit while also watching me very closely…. Obsessed vibes. ‘Pinnacle Bitch’ is for the ones who like to shake their shit and not give a fuck and take care of themselves. I wanted people to feel sexy when they sang the words; this song is for literally everyone who has ever had people talk shit about them for doing them. It’s for the baddies. I think having such a positive reaction from people helped my confidence in my writing and just saying what I wanted and just having a ‘fuck it’ attitude. After releasing ‘Blak Britney’ it really hit home that Black women really appreciated being appreciated. Women from as young as 6 up to the aunties and grandmas have reached out to me or talked to me about how they love the song, and that made it all worth it. Also it’s not a Miss Kaninna song with out saying ‘Fuck you to the government and the people who uphold the systems in place to oppress Black people’.”

Premier Artists booking agent Beau Kochmanz says of signing Miss Kaninna, who joins a roster that includes icons like Jessica Mauboy, Christine Anu and A.B. Original: “We’re so excited to be working with Miss Kaninna and her team. Miss Kaninna is such an incredible & unique talent with a live show that is unrivalled and to be trusted with her live show bookings is a big honour for us – let’s go”

Recently nominated for The Uncle Archie Roach Foundation Award for Emerging Talent at the Music Victoria Awards, Miss Kannina is “a Blak girl in the colony trying to uplift [her] community” – already a seasoned performer well before skyrocketing demand for her live show which must be experienced to be understood, floating between neo-soul, hip-hop and alt-rock – thanks to a history of growing up in a musical community & sitting side of stage touring with her mother (musician, activist and facilitator Ruth Langford).

Riding high on recent frenzied-yet-impossibly-slick showcases at SXSW Sydney and BIGSOUND (which Scenestr described as “impassably full”) backed by her live band – for the latter of which she was named as a highlight / one not to miss by The Music (who featured her on their digital cover), Rolling Stone AU, Pilerats, Music Feeds, Scenestr and more – in her short career so far, Miss Kaninna has established herself as a voice of punk and power that will not be ignored: one with a mission to bring new representation to the scene and an urgency to dismantle oppressive structures in the colony. She’s also established strong mutual respect and community with other artists like Barkaa, Jesswar, Nooky, Tasman Keith and Briggs, has been selected to co-headline ALWAYS LIVE: Hometown with A.B. Original & DRMNGNOW, headlined the NAIDOC Bad Apples Showcase, played Yirramboi Festival, Heaps Gay, A Festival Called Panama, Dark Mofo, Pangaea, Party In The Paddock, MONA FOMA, The Great Escape and was hand-picked by triple j Unearthed to play Treaty Day Out, as well as selected to participate in the recent APRA AMCOS TikTok SongHubs workshop.

Miss Kaninna’s art is a powerful expression of her experiences as a young Blak woman in so-called Australia, drawing from the rich cultural heritage and paths laid before her by her Matriarchs. She was accepted into WAAPA, eventually going on to be cast as Cynthia in the national theatre tour of The Sapphires, a role that led to her pivotal permanent move to Naarm, where her solo project began to take shape. Her grandmother, Rosalind Langford, was a famous painter and renowned activist who played a vital role in starting the Aboriginal Information Service (AIS) in the 70s, the first Aboriginal organisation in Iutruwita/Tasmania, at a time when the state denied the existence of Aboriginal people despite accepting Commonwealth money for them. Her mother Ruth engages in work with the Indigenous Women’s Legal Centre for women experiencing violence in the family and is the founder ofNayri Niara, an Aboriginal social enterprise that works to uplift local communities.

With additional adds and strong support from FBi Radio, SYN FM, Triple R, PBSFM, 2SER, RTRFM, 4ZZZ and many more for the groundbreaking artist, ‘Blak Britney’ and ‘Pinnacle Bitch’ are taken from Miss Kaninna’s as-yet-unannounced debut EP, due for release in 2024 via Soul Has No Tempo.
