Molly Mckew’s debut album “It should have been done with ease” is released today, Friday, April 26th, 2024. Mckew’s record is an intimate collection of songs that explore heartbreak, fantasy, rumination and absence. Mckew’s lyrics are honest and at times humorous, exploring sadness and pain without over-sentiment or mawkishness. Mckew’s alt-pop-folk sound showcases her pop and celtic influences as well as inspiration from cyclical folk songs and choral pieces, rich in harmony and dramatic and soulful vocals.

The 11 tracks feature Mckew on guitar and vocals, with lead guitar from Sam Walsh, violin from Rowena Wise, Cello from Vincent Ward and piano from Didirri Peters. It was recorded by singer-songwriter, producer and sound engineer Rowena Wise, who also produced the album in her studio, Road Noise Studios, and played violin on a number of tracks. “It should have been done with ease” is being released through Dinkum Records, a punk-folk record label from Melbourne. The album will be launched on Sunday May 12th at Shotkickers with a full band show, with support from Ally Mac.

Molly Mckew (guitar/vox) performs moody, often sad, alt-folk drenched in harmony. Her unique celtic influenced alt-folk/pop is an amalgamation of the European folk and choral music of her childhood, the 90s and 2000s rock/pop of her teenagehood, and her heartbroken contemporaries. Mckew began gigging around Melbourne in 2015, first under the name Nancy Cole, then as part of a duo, Blue Lining. The 2020 lockdowns bore creative fruit and she began performing under her own name at the start of 2021, playing at beloved Melbourne venues like Old Bar, the Merri Creek Tavern, the Pinnacle and the Retreat.

Mckew made her interstate debut in 2023, playing at the internationally esteemed Woodford Folk Festival. She released her debut solo EP, ‘I couldn’t grasp it’ in August 2022, and two singles from the forthcoming album ‘I dream of the lightness of the presence of you’ and ‘On waking up, it was still true’ in 2023. She released a third single and video ‘The shape of grief’ in March 2024. Her album ‘It should have been done with ease” is released through Dinkum Records (Narrm) on April 26th. It was recorded at Road Noise Studios by Rowena Wise and features violin by Rowena Wise, Cello by Vincent Ward and piano by Didirri Peters.

Track list
And on waking up, it was still true
I long to weep to wail
I dream of the lightness of the presence of you
The shape of grief
I notice your forearms
It should have been done with ease
You were holding a bottle of sparkling
You were reading in your favorite chair (self-conscious posturing)
I can’t move
To carry our love
Sway (be there)

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
