Momma, the Brooklyn-based band led by singers/guitarists Allegra Weingarten and Etta Friedman, today share their anthemic new single ‘Rockstar‘ – a slice of infectiously poppy grunge that marks the band out as one of this year’s most undoubtedly exciting prospects. Alongside the release, Momma announce their signing with Australian label home Mirror Records; their UK live debut, and a series of US shows in support of Wet Leg. New dates join an extensive US run with Snail Mail in August.
The accompanying video is a must-watch – directed by LA-based duo Batshit! (filmmakers Ben Joyner & Henry Drayton) – brimming with unbridled energy as it pays tongue-in-cheek tribute to Friedman and Weingarten’s rock music comedy favourites Josie and the Pussycats, School of Rock and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny.

“Etta and I wanted to write a song about making it big, and becoming rockstars. We didn’t want to take anything too seriously, lyrically, or musically. We just wanted the song to sound big,” Weingarten says. “We thought it would be cool to have our own little rockumentary condensed in a 3-minute music video. It’s also kind of like a manifestation – I think we shamelessly want all of these things to happen in our careers.”
‘Rockstar’ is the band’s latest single following November’s drop ‘Medicine‘. Produced and mixed by the band’s bassist Aron Kobayashi Ritch, these two songs mark Friedman and Weingarten’s first tracks written and recorded in the band’s new hometown of Brooklyn, New York.
‘Medicine’ earned significant praise and support upon release from Rolling Stone, The FADER (20 Best Rock Songs Right Now), The Line Of Best Fit, NME, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence (Best Songs of the Week) and many more.
The band’s critically acclaimed 2020 LP Two of Me—a determined concept album situated in an imagined purgatory called The Bug House—heralded Momma as stars in the making, with coverage via Rolling Stone (Artist You Need to Know), Pigeons & Planes (Best New Artists), V Magazine, LA Weekly, Pitchfork (Selects Playlist), The AV Club, Paste,NYLON, Alternative Press and more.
