moonsea, otherwise known as songwriter Cecilia Xu, has today announced her debut single Lullabye, a wistful culmination of contemporary classical influences married with hook-laden pop – out now.  The sweeping track is accompanied by an evocative, one-shot video set where the ocean meets the sand – and the visual perfectly encapsulates the emotion behind the song.

Lullabye is a song that would feel comfortable on the Bridgerton soundtrack – perfectly dramatic, melancholic, and dripping with feeling, the song builds with a sonic arc that will surprise and uplift the listener. Piano and moonsea’s delicate vocal open the track, isolated and vulnerable – then strings, and tasteful, textured percussion sweep up and transport the listener into euphoria. It’s a mature, thoughtful and complete release from this young artist, one that feels equally influenced by Taylor Swift’s enchanting, wide-eyed Speak Now, and the understated sophistication of folklore.

Speaking on the inspiration behind Lullabye, and the collaborative process behind its creation, moonsea says, “I was incredibly lucky to have Xavier Dunn produce this song. We both grew up playing stringed instruments, so it felt like we were speaking the same language when communicating my vision for Lullabye. Xavier is absolutely lovely and a master at what he does.”

moonsea is named for Cecilia’s Chinese name Haiming – “hai” meaning sea, and “ming’” meaning bright, usually pertaining to moonlight. As she explains, “I’ve been trying to connect more to my Chinese heritage as I’ve gotten older and it felt right to incorporate it into my artist name.”  For a project that is so delicately beautiful, like moonlight bouncing gently off the waves, it’s the perfect title.

Cecilia balances her work as moonsea with her career as a doctor. She finds that the two lives, while very different, complement each other exactly – a career in medicine requires precision, analytical thinking – whereas music allows her to express herself creatively and contribute to the world in a completely different way.

Lullabye is out now.
