Today, Naarm punk / hip hop artist MUDRAT releases his new single YEAR OF THE RAT.
YEAR OF THE RAT marks a full circle for MUDRAT, coinciding with the first anniversary of the project’s December 2023 launch—completing the literal Year of the Rat.
On YEAR OF THE RAT, MUDRAT pushes boundaries once again, seamlessly weaving Cypress Hill-inspired boom-bap beats with a nu-metal-infused, head-banging chorus that demands attention. Delivered with a snarling, raw Australian accent, MUDRAT’s vocals cut through the noise, creating a sonic identity that’s unmistakably his own.

About MUDRAT
A multi-talented creative visionary, rapper, singer and writer, MUDRAT (Sean Thompson), has gained acclaim for blending of punk, metal & hip-hop influences alongside passionate delivery & raw lyricism. Creating music that draws from his perspective of the world, life experience and cultural roots and political beliefs he has quickly cultivated a reputation for his versatility, raw energy & powerful live performances.
MUDRAT’s debut single “MUD” was featured on All New Metal (723,000) within days of its submission, a reflection of his unorthodox and punk-rock ascent. His music has been played at both frontline protests and national radio, rallying a fanbase eager to mobilise for his cause. Winning St Kilda Festival’s New Music Competition further solidified his reputation. Beyond the music, MUDRAT’s impassioned speeches and skits with collaborators like PurplePingers have drawn significant attention.
Though a solo act in spirit, MUDRAT performs live with a seasoned five-piece band, including Emile Battour (formerly of Ocean Grove) on drums and Carlo Darbisi (formerly of Earth Caller) on guitar, adding an explosive energy to his live shows.
Having opened for BARKAA, sold out his first headline show at Shotkickers (200 capacity), and made waves at BIGSOUND, MUDRAT is quickly becoming a must-see live performer.
