After an amazing debut in 2018, Perth’s only festival for high school students, Sound On is back. Presented by Murdoch University, the festival combines music with immersive and innovative experiences to encourage free thinking, while guiding teenagers towards unlocking life’s potential after high school, something that Murdoch University has been synonymous with since the 1970s.
Peking Duk, Ruel, G Flip, Stevan, FlexMami and Bexx will bring their incredible musical talents to the Perth Arena on September 21, with the festivities commencing at 2pm for a whole day of fun and inspiration.
.
.
Beyond the main stage, immersive experiences from The Indigo Project will offer thousands of Australia’s future generation an engaging opportunity to think freely and dream bigger during a time of anticipated change. Perth’s audience have the chance to learn from their idols in the intimate panel Dream Big – seeing the festival’s headliners like Peking Duk, Ruel and G Flip share their strategies for what it takes to chase your dreams, how to rise up after setbacks and how to be authentically yourself. This will be followed by The Future Beats Experience which is all about being guided into visualising your dreams for the future, set to contemporary beats turned up loud.
Alongside feel-good activations offerings, including the Murdoch University video games room, photo-booths, silent disco, pet therapy, chill out area, communal art and a glitter and braid bar, Sound On Festival is a teenager’s one-stop shop for exploring their passions, and having the chance to create new friendships and connections with their peers over the six plus hours of the event.

Headlining the arena main stage with a DJ set to remember is none other than Australian electronic music royalty, Peking Duk. They’re the guys wearing matching tracksuits on the red carpet, the showmen going viral with their onstage antics, the everyday heroes bringing fans backstage and the hitmakers responsible for your favourite songs. Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles started their ascent in 2014 with ARIA winning, four-times platinum single “High”, which became #1 most played track on triple j that year and #2 in the Hottest 100. Following up with the triple platinum “Take Me Over” and the gold-certified “Say My Name”, the pair delivered their biggest hit to date with “Stranger” feat. Elliphant, which has racked up 30 million streams on Spotify & won the Apple Music Song of the Year award at the 2017 ARIAs. Known for their party antics, their live show will leave you sweat-soaked and picking bits of confetti out of your hair for days and with a debut album around the corner, Peking Duk’s domination isn’t done yet.

.
Co-headlining is vocal prodigy Ruel. The youngest ever performer on triple j’s Like A Version, the youngest solo artist to win an ARIA Award and, the youngest male artist to sell out 2x shows at the Sydney Opera House in minutes, Ruel seems to be breaking records for fun. A transcendent new star on an unstoppable trajectory, the London-born, Sydney-based songwriter found himself on the ARIA podium as he took out the 2018 Breakthrough Artist gong for his soul-soaked banger “Dazed and Confused”, which landed in triple j’s Hottest 100 alongside “Younger”. Both singles summoned a tidal wave of praise from the likes of Sir Elton John, Khalid, GoldLink and Gallant. With these five-star endorsements, it was inevitable that fanbases would start mobilising worldwide, selling out all over the globe with the 16 year old wunderkind now sitting on a monstrous 200+ million global streams. Ruel’s latest single “Painkiller” has made waves gathering over 5 million streams and 4 million video views in the first month alone, proving that the young prodigy is continuing to grow at an exponential rate.

Joining the pack will be Melbourne singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist G Flip. Born Georgia Flipo, G Flip fell in love with the drums as a kid and travelled the US as a touring drummer in her early 20s. Never one to sit still, she then locked herself in her bedroom studio for all of 2017 and taught herself how to write and produce her own songs, which saw the release of 2018 debut single “About You”. Since the release she has found love on a global scale, wowing audiences at SXSW, The Great Escape and most recently London Calling. Having sold out multiple headline tours in mere days and a string of glimmering, bittersweet pop anthems with the infectious “Killing My Time” and “Drink Too Much”, there is only upwards for the beloved multi-instrumentalist.
Making his way from the beachside town of Wollongong, NSW is 18-year-old musical powerhouse on the rise, Stevan. The multi-talented producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist combines his many musical skills to create woozy, dreamlike pop songs that defy genres and classification. Before graduating high school Stevan garnered a loyal underground following on SoundCloud and signed to US label Honeymoon Records (an imprint of Lyor Cohen’s 300 Entertainment). His debut single “Timee” boasts Stevan’s greatest songwriting to date, featuring laidback guitar licks, lo-fi drums and instantly catchy vocal harmonies. With an arsenal of musical talent and a devoted fan base, Stevan is on his way to big things.

Rounding out the musical lineup is internet sensation and the ultimate slashie, FlexMami. A life coach legend, disc jockey extraordinaire and the ultimate millennial in media, FlexMami has established herself as an integral part of Australia’s youth and urban culture, since 2015. With a career spanning tv presenting, radio hosting, podcasting fashion, music, writing and tour support spots for some big players, like Billie Eilish & Kaytranada, Flex is an integral part of Sound On, forever glowing in positivity and dream chasing. Joining her and completing the music lineup for 2019 is local Perth artist and producer DJ Bexx, who’ll be bringing a dynamic round of tunes to the day.
After her debut last year, The Indigo Project founder, Perth-born Mary Hoang will return to Sound On Festival in 2019. An acclaimed artist, psychologist, motivational speaker and entrepreneurial role model, Hoang’s creative approach aims to inspire young people to think outside the box of what they can achieve in their tertiary studies and beyond.

Mary Hoang of The Indigo Project, says of Sound On: “In 2018 we were lucky enough to be part of Sound On Festival and connect with Perth teenagers, who love good music and are keen to take charge of their futures. We’re so excited to partner again with Murdoch University and bring back this one-of-a-kind event. With the combination of massive artists, alongside immersive workshop experiences, Sound On is a unique festival a playground of entertainment and empowerment. We can’t wait for what 2019 has in store!”
Neil Cullingford, Director Marketing & Communications of Murdoch University, says: “Sound On Festival is back in 2019 after last year’s inaugural festival was embraced by Perth high schoolers. Over the last 40 years, Murdoch has fostered free thinking in our students, and Sound On Festival provides us with an opportunity to bring this way of thinking to life, which is really important as Perth’s High School students consider their next steps following High School. As a university that strives for creativity across all of our courses, Sound On Festival also gives our current students the chance to experience the creative elements of a festival from photography, to sound, to design. Murdoch University is also a place for students to feel like they belong, and we are aiming to create this same feeling of connection and community at this event. We’re very proud to deliver Sound On Festival to Perth, and get young people excited about their futures.”
Sound On presented by Murdoch University, offers the opportunity to consider career pathways and ambitions of lifelong learning in one destination. Harnessing the elation and inspiration brought by some of Australia’s brightest game-changers, thinkers and artists, don’t miss joining a day of free thinking and feel-good music, when Sound On Festival returns to RAC Arena on Saturday September 21.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
