On Saturday 28 September 2019, Sydney’s iconic Carriageworks will host the inaugural ZoneOut International Music Festival – a brand new one-day event bringing together performances from leading international and Australian artists, alongside engaging panel discussions, yoga sessions and thought-provoking film screenings.
Presented by Universal Music Australia, ZoneOut builds on the growing popularity of neo-classical music, which fuses elements of classical, ambient, electronic and alternative music into an evocative musical soundscape.
The line-up for ZoneOut features a number of artists who are highly-regarded in this musical genre, including festival ambassador LUKE HOWARD (Australia) and pianist SOPHIE HUTCHINGS (Australia), as well as Australian debut performances by enigmatic masked musician LAMBERT (Germany), highly acclaimed cellist PETER GREGSON (UK) and indie harpist REMY VAN KESTEREN (Netherlands).
Adding further musical diversity to the line-up are vibrant Australian electronic music producers ANATOLE and DOUBLE TOUCH, breakout Kenyan singer/songwriter J.S. ONDARA, emerging Irish folk singer SIBEAL, and Australian pianist KRISTIAN CHONG, who will perform a relaxation set of classical works at his PEACEFUL PIANO concert.
As the festival’s inaugural ambassador, Luke Howard says: “I’m excited to perform alongside some of my favourite musicians and label-mates. This genre has been under-represented in Australia and ZoneOut is putting it on the map.”
Led by Melbourne composer NAT BARTSCH, the ZoneOut Festival schedule will include three ‘cozy concerts’, offering chilled-out, family-friendly musical experiences. Comfy floor seating for parents and babies and pram parking will be available.
At ZoneOut, festival-goers can enjoy ticketed performances and a range of free experiences throughout the day. For healthy food and drink options, the Carriageworks Farmers Market will be open from 8am.
ZoneOut will be held in three venues within the Carriageworks complex:
· The RED ROOM is a 300-seat in-the-round performance venue with minimalist visual aesthetic.
· The 500-seat BLUE ROOM is the ZoneOut Festival’s largest performance space and will house a variety of unique concerts in an immersive environment.
· The GREEN ROOM will be the home of wellness at ZoneOut. The space will play host to morning yoga sessions (presented by Power Living) and panel discussions on the topics Music and Wellness, Music and the Environment, and The New Sound of Classical Music.
Throughout the day, a series of films will be presented on the big screen for festival-goers to enjoy in-between concerts while they are relaxing in the Green Room. Explore the creative process of composers Ludovico Einaudi and Ólafur Arnalds, and become immersed in the stunning visuals of Dutch pianist and composer Joep Beving.
There will also be a special presentation of the National Geographic documentary Save This Rhino, in which cricket legends Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Smith and outback wrangler Matt Wrightjoin forces in an exposé on the rhino crisis and the new technologies and strategies to combat it. Director Mick Lawrence will appear on the Music and the Environment panel following the screening of Save This Rhino to provide further insight into the film.
Furthermore, there will be a chance for fans of Max Richter to see film footage from his extraordinary 8-hour SLEEP overnight performances.
In the Green Room, festival-goers will be able to browse the ZOSHOP merchandise stand and enjoy a selection of interactive partner experiences. For example, at the Roland Synth Station, festival-goers can unleash their inner creativity and jam on a range of musical synthesisers, provided by iconic instrument-maker Roland. More experiences will be announced over the coming weeks.
Tickets can be purchased for individual concerts, afternoon or evening ticket packages, or a full festival pass.
