Today, New Zealand’s worldly indie dream-pop band Mild Orange shares their transcendent and smooth yet crunchy new single ‘This Kinda Day’ accompanied by an animated music video via AWAL. Their internet-cult following has reached fans from Cairo to Cape Town, Lima to LA, Seoul to Sydney, London to Ulanbutar giving them close to 50 million YouTube views alone.
The Kiwi band’s new single ‘This Kinda Day’ features one of frontman Mehrtens’ most personal lyrical and songwriting contributions to date. “I was recovering from pneumonia and pleurisy back in October 2020, which nearly wiped me out and left me sick for about six months. With sickness came a period where I experienced an inability to do what I love, and it meant we had to cancel some of our biggest shows to date and some important radio and TV appearances. The disappointment in myself, and letting down others (the band, fans, people involved) weighed heavy on me and sent me downward. But it turned out that my friends, family, and fans were all super supportive and gave me strength,” says Josh. “To me, this song represents a lot of growth in perspective, and I’d love to share that appreciation with others in hopes that it might help some not go down a dark path alone,” he adds.
The band has a passion for working with creatives from all corners of the world to bring to life their vision. The music video for ‘This Kinda Day’ was made in correspondence between NZ, LA, and Indonesia. When asked about the clip, Josh answered: “I wanted to show the viewer the perspective of pulling out and out of different headspaces – and figured this could best be done through animation,” says Josh of the clip. “The song has themes of mental health and the importance of reaching out to your mates, which was a crucial element that needed to be represented in the clip. We wanted the message of normalising reaching out to friends to be included, so that’s why you see the ‘hey’ text to symbolise this, then the character seeing his supportive friends at the end of their turbulent night.”

About Mild Orange
Formed in 2018, Mild Orange are made up of childhood mates, frontman Josh Mehrtens and lead guitarist Josh Reid, with bassist Tom Kelk and drummer Jack Ferguson. Together they create energetic, summer-bummer psychedelic rock complete with compelling lyrics and are known for their relaxed and buoyant sound. Their music has racked up close to 50 million YouTube views combined and on Spotify millions of streams including 15 million alone for their breakout single, ‘Some Feeling’.
In the band’s short history, they’ve played headline shows in 20 cities across Europe and the UK and sold out multiple headline tours in New Zealand. They’ve shared the same stage as The Strokes in London and ‘Trainspotting’s’ Underworld in Mexico City. They’ve also appeared at Rhythm & Vines, Rhythm & Alps, Electric Avenue, Baydreams, Nest Fest and That Weekend festivals. Mild Orange were due to support Dope Lemon in their upcoming tour in New Zealand, but will be rescheduled / postponed due to Covid19 and recent lockdowns.
The quartet have released two solid albums. The first, Foreplay released in 2018 and the second self-titled Mild Orange which UK’s Riot Magazine named “the quintessential summertime album” in 2020. The albums have impressively all been self-produced, engineered and mixed by Mehrtens – proving the notion that you don’t need a big record label or professional studio to create sounds and feelings that will resonate with the world.
When asked about the meaning behind their name – Mild Orange, they shared: “The colour orange sparks optimism, and a stimulation of warmth and happiness.” Mild Orange’s music does just that and although their new single ‘This Kinda Day’ is deep, it still leaves you feeling sun-kissed and warm and like a beach swim that sense of freshness and escapism. They just have a way of transporting their listener to feeling relaxed – at the beach, maybe with a can in hand. Their laid back nature is where the word ‘Mild’ comes into play. “Mild, well ‘cause we’re not too over the top with it.”

AMNPLIFY – LF
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
