Madonna is an activist, and so was Marilyn Monroe, thus when it came to preparing Nora’s sophomore EP, there was no question about the cause it should revolve around. As well as it being clear that there should be a cause to begin with. Nora says that, ‘Yes, indeed, there is a time and place for groovy, happy music – such was my 1st EP, however, I think that now it is time to clarify my beliefs and the beliefs of those I hold close.’ Present Chronicles, the EP, wrote itself unexpectedly, as Nora, like many others, had to face the reality of the time she was living in and address the collective pain her home country, Ukraine, has been in for over a year. ‘I wondered what I could do to make it hurt a little less, to communicate our anger to the rest of the world,’ Nora says. So, in the mindset of not knowing what to do, Present Chronicles came together – writing music seemed to be the only way to articulate something substantial.

Over the course of a couple months, as more songs continued being created, Nora understood that this piece of work wasn’t going to be just about war, it was going to be about the human experience through times when accepting reality was not an option. Through times when the constant ‘character development’ made individuals nauseous. And so, Present Chronicles is about moments when it seems as though one is about to lose everything that once made them human – it is about loneliness, betrayal, callings of the heart, and the responsibilities of the blood.

’Some of the songs I wrote didn’t seem war related to me at all, they didn’t feel like they encapsulated the message I wanted to put out, some I wrote before the war even began, but soon I realized that, yes, they are very relevant, they address all of the emotional factors and burdens that came into play because of what was happening.’ However, Present Chronicles does not seek to summon pity, it seeks to show the anger and resilience of the Ukrainian people, and expose the Russians for what they really are: a battalion under the rule of a greedy dictator with a lust for innocent blood. Tracks on the EP such as ‘KGB’ put all of the Russian propaganda to rest and have an ironic tone in the lyrics, seeking to mock the regime which only drastically degraded since the times of the Soviet Union. Present Chronicles conveys a tragic period, but one that will soon end. Nora hopes that the music will serve as a legacy.
