Party In the Paddock, vocal supporters of pill testing at music festivals for many years, are getting real in 2020. The festival will submit a petition to parliament, to be tabled by the Tasmanian Greens, calling for pill testing to be trialled in Tasmania.
Party In The Paddock is a celebration of music, art and friendship, a weekend away from normal life amongst the rolling hills of Northern Tasmania. To make sure that the festival is nothing but a safe place to have fun, organisers encourage their patrons to look out for each other and be educated on safe partying. The tragic stories of overdoses we hear every year throughout the summer music festival season do not fit into this ethos.
“We do not condone the use of illegal substances at PITP,” said festival organiser Jesse Higgs. “But we cannot be ignorant to the fact that young people all around Australia are using them within our communities. Pill testing is not a silver bullet, but it’s a proven and positive way to help prevent this kind of tragedy. The more education that we can bring to this health issue at our festival, the better.”
Pill Testing Australia has formally trialled pill testing at Groovin’ the Moo festival in the ACT, and they demonstrated reduced harm, reduced drug use, and provided health advice to patrons. These trials were supported by the ACT Government, festival organisers, and police and health services. Now, we want to bring pill testing to Tassie, so the festival-goers who come from across Tasmania and interstate to our festival return home safely.
Deputy NSW Coroner Harriet Grahame was clear in her findings last week – pill testing saves lives, and it should have a place at music festivals this summer.
Our supporters the Tasmanian Greens said, “A successful pill testing model is ready to be implemented in Tasmania. The Hodgman Government must act on the Coroner’s recommendation, and support Party in the Paddock to provide pill testing at their festival this summer.”
