With their oldest artist being only nineteen, Blue Mountains band Penny Dreadful is well worth the watch. They display the signposts of a classic garage rock sound with lyrics and musicianship which reach far beyond their years. This week they’ll be playing at the Hideaway Bar at their Mardi Gras event.
The Hideaway’s ‘Gayest Night’ event will be drowning in the sound of screeching guitars backed by precise percussion, knitted together by bleary and strained vocals. Penny Dreadful is tight and well rehearsed, carrying heavy influences from bands like The Strokes, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and Silverchair. These classic influences are fused with the modern perspective of groups such as Violent Soho and Ballpark Music and as a result, they have created a sound both totally original and strangely familiar all at once.
Friday night will bring a selection of Penny Dreadful originals like Plumtree, Capsize and Hypnopompia, as well as a range of covers that boasting the broad array of artists which have shaped their own unique music. Because of the scale and scope of the band’s listening, there is something for everyone to sing, scream and dance along to.
Hideaway’s Gayest Night also brings Sydney’s The Fungus and Newcastle’s I Hate People together for a trio of dips at Sydney’s grungiest Mardi Gras Party. So, smudge the eyeliner, grab your feather boa, adorn yourself in dildos and get ready to be shocked by the raw talent of this young band.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
