The music industry’s gender disparity is something that is often overlooked, and quite frankly it’s time we start seeing a better representation of female and non-binary artists. Presented by SYS Sister Sounds, ‘Pho The Girls’ is a DJ workshop designed to do just that.

Coming to Sydney and Melbourne this November/December with Brisbane dates to be announced, ‘Pho The Girls’ will see its first ever run of ‘Intro To DJ Workshops’ on Australian soil, which will cover basic beginner’s training on how to DJ using CDJs/controllers. The workshops are open to women and non-binary people and has been featured on WXMB 2 and Urbanist Hanoi.

The event’s host Maggie Tra says, “Pho The Girls is all about supporting and uplifting more women and non-binary people in the music industry”.

“The amount of love and support I’ve received from women in my life through working in the music industry or even on a human level has pushed me to create SYS Sister Sounds”.

Using the world as her playground, Maggie Tra is an Australian-Cambodian DJ that has graced the decks in Brussels, Berlin, London, Australia and Vietnam. The spell-bounding smooth selector established herself behind the scenes in the music industry as a journalist, blogger and radio host. In 2011, she founded music publication ‘Stimulate Your Soul‘, which soon branched out as a radio show on Australia’s renowned KISS FM, cementing Maggie as a trusted tastemaker.

Dedicated to supporting emerging artists and uplifting women, Maggie started a new organisation called ‘SYS Sister Sounds‘, which is a community built to empower women in the creative/music industry and make a living from it.

Soon born from that very concept with her heart on giving back to her Asian roots, Maggie established #Phothegirls in Hanoi, Vietnam. Now coming to Australia, the workshop will have limited participants, so that everyone can have a play on the decks. It’s a playful workshop built to provide a safe space for women and non-binary people as well as a space to have fun.

The Sydney workshop with be housed by Kiln Recording Studios, an audio production facility of the absolute highest level in terms of modern studio workflow, accurate monitoring and excellent acoustics.

In Melbourne, the workshop will be held at LOOP Project Space & Bar, a venue that prides itself in providing a melting pot for emerging artists, filmmakers, DJs, writers, progressive thinkers, innovators, and social and environmental activists.
