Pink Floyd will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its classic album THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON with a once-in-a-lifetime listening event timed with the viewing of an extraordinary and rare total solar eclipse.
On Thursday 20 April, the shadow of the moon will graze the tip of Western Australia, as it travels over one of the world’s most beautiful areas – the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Marine Park (Nyinggulu) in Exmouth. The town will be the best land-based place on Earth to experience the 2023 total solar eclipse.
Overseen by the group’s long time Creative Consultant and Hipgnosis co-founder, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, Pink Floyd is offering 8 Australian competition winners the exclusive opportunity to visit a special scenic location within the region to hear THEDARK SIDE OF THE MOON in full – with Roger Waters iconic closing lines “But the sun is eclipsed by the moon…” from the album ’s soaring epic final song ‘Eclipse’ timed to align with the moment of total eclipse.
To enter, fans must submit a video of 30 seconds or less explaining why they should be given the listening experience of a lifetime HERE.
The 8 competition winners will be called the ‘Astronomy Domine 8’ – a nod to the band’s classic song of the same name.
Says Powell: “Since its release 50 years ago, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOONhas been embraced by multiple generations across the world because it examines universal themes of greed, mortality, the dark and light sides of the human psyche and, of course, our place in the cosmos – I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to commemorate it ’s release than with this rare and beautiful phenomenon that visually symbolizes so much of what the album explores”.
Australian Pink Floyd fans who are not successful in the competition can still partake in a THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON eclipse listening session, with the solar eclipse partially viewable across the country (with varying degrees of magnitude). Below are the times to start playing the album to approximately align Roger Waters final line of ‘Eclipse’ with the partial eclipse*:
WESTERN AUSTRALIA – approx. 10.30am local time; 0.766 Magnitude (for Perth – the eclipse will be greater magnitude further north)
SOUTH AUSTRALIA – approx. 12.48pm local time; 0.192 Magnitude
NORTHERN TERRITORY – approx. 1.10pm local time; 0.845 Magnitude
TASMANIA – approx. 1.24pm local time; 0.125 Magnitude

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is one of the most celebrated albums of all time and has sold over 50 million copies worldwide. It is widely considered one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums ever. Pink Floyd have released a new deluxe box set including CD and gatefold vinyl of the newly remastered studio album and Blu-Ray + DVD audio featuring the original 5.1 mix and remastered stereo versions. The set also includes additional new Blu-ray disc of Atmos mix plus CD and LP of THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON – LIVE AT WEMBLEY EMPIRE POOL, LONDON, 1974.
The 300-kilometre-long, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Marine Park is 1,200 kilometres north of Perth (Boorloo) along Western Australia’s Coral Coast Highway. The Ningaloo region is renowned as where the outback meets the reef – home to Australia’s largest fringing reef adjoining the rusty gorges of Cape Range National Park.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
