PINK MATTER
Release vivacious and nauseating new single
‘Cleo’

“ [Cleo] coils around you like a serpent, slowly hypnotising you.”
– Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed.

If there was a door at the back of your head, Pink Matter are the soundtrack to you walking through it; seeing yourself look at the world. The neo-soul quartet weave grimy and sultry soundscapes, each instrument acting as character in a plot where resolution and closure are luxuries. Their sonic heaven is a room full of mirrors that entices the acceptance of imperfection.
Premiering on triple J’s Roots N All on Monday evening, ‘Cleo’ is a lustful exploration of one’s ideal partner. The drums and bass form a robust-yet-unnerving groove, whilst high heeled synths and chapped butter-like vocals soak the top end. Together they create a sweeping sense of curiosity; narrating the moment where you catch a glimpse of the perfect strangers’ eye. Thoughts quickly race from ‘who are you?’ to imagining a life together.
The song culminates upon learning this ideal partner’s name, each instrument slinking its shoulders whilst a relieved Raywood repeatedly sings ‘Cleo’. This realisation quickly descends into a jazzy chaos, for lust is equal parts ecstasy and nausea. Desire isn’t comforting.
Formed in late 2016 the all female group have swiftly garnered praise winning the QUBE Effect’s ‘People Choice Award’ and receiving airplay on Triple J and 4ZZZ for their debut single ‘Quicksand‘. The four-piece have also performed at Jungle Love Festival and the Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, and played with the likes of Bugs & The Creases. Having just been announced for BIGSOUND 2018, Pink Matter’s impressionistic take on neo-soul is sure to make waves.
‘Cleo’ is out now on all platforms.
