Aussie indie-rock quartet PLANET (*band name is capitalized) have today shared details of their highly anticipated debut album Information Overload out March 11, 2022 via Dew Process.
Produced and mixed by the band and the inimitable Adrian Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters), the pulsating 12-track album will also feature previous releases ‘Ship Won’t Change’, ‘Resign’ & ‘Aching Dream’, a taste of what to expect from a band that has gone from strength to strength since inception.
Recorded when the world stopped turning at the height of COVID-19 in 2020, Information Overload was partially recorded in some kind of undercover, rock ‘n’ roll heist.
Describing the process lead singer Matty Took says, “It was a bit of an Ocean’s Eleven sort of vibe. I met this guy at a party. We were kind of on a bit of a bender and he was like, ‘I work at AIM [the Australian Institute of Music – a music and music industry tertiary school in the city centre of Sydney]. I do all the trouble shooting for their microphones. Man, no one’s using the studio, you should just come in and record.’”
Took, lead guitarist Tommy Peppit, drummer Harry Stewart-Weeks and bassist Jimmy Weaver, had spent the previous half a decade honing their skills and song craft, touring and performing relentlessly off the back of two EPs (2018’s Waking Eight and 2020’s Maybe Someday – their first with Australian label partner Dew Process). They’d been around the world and back again and were totally ready to roll with the punches as they presented themselves.
The chaos of the world’s circumstances last year had forced PLANET to cancel their original plans to tour Europe before finishing with a month-long studio session in London with legendary producer and engineer Adrian Bushby (New Order, Placebo, U2, Spice Girls). Instead, they found themselves stuck at home in Sydney’s Inner West.
They began pulling everything together for the record – collecting home studio recordings, drums tracked with regular collaborator Lachlan Mitchell at Parliament Studios in Sydney, and those sneaky AIM sessions – pooling them all together and teaming up with Bushby (via Zoom) to turn it into something larger than the sum of its parts.
The opening track ‘Lost My Honesty’ tells that story out of the blocks. It opens with a slightly janky sounding recording of a solo acoustic guitar, like it’s come direct from the voice memos of an iPhone. Within seconds though, a lead guitar roars into the mix, buzzing with reverb and opening the floodgates – exposing Information Overload as an album full of shimmering guitars, winding lead lines, Took’s inimitable voice, luscious sounding drums, and an orchestral flourish brought together by that lovely unwatched grand piano, and strings recorded in Manchester.

‘Ship Won’t Change,’ explores deep seeded doubt in a relationship – whether those doubts are even warranted. The first single released, ‘Resign,’ also took aim at the overwhelming nature of modern life, as Took sings a refrain we can relate to in the chorus, “I’m breaking at the seams.”
Despite the at times alienated nature of the lyrics, however, sonically Information Overload feels like a warm, whisky-soaked dream. With moments that conjure memories of The Verve or The War On Drugs, it’s an album that feels bright and effervescent. Each song floats from one to the next, with an atmosphere that permeates the entire thing.
Even previously released singles that were revisited for the new album like ‘Northern Skyline’ soar with a whole new energy – highlighting a move away from their previous approach of flooding the mix with guitar tracks and instead letting each individual instrument have its own space.
Guitarist Tommy says, “There’s definitely a feeling of euphoria surrounding the long overdue announcement of our debut album. It’s a project that’s been in the works for about two years now. We’ve put a lot of effort into it and we all feel pretty comfy with it now. Every track has its purpose and I feel Matty has definitely opened up lyrically a bit more touching on struggles that most of us face in relation to mental health and relationships. We’re really proud of the body of work that’s been produced and can’t wait for the release in March next year.”
To have brought those sounds to life with their original plans and constraints of a month in a studio now seems almost impossible. Instead, these circumstances transpired to help the band write and record a truly, truly unique debut album – in every possible way.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
