JANUARY 2019 was a month to remember for Kootingal’s Lizzie Steadman for all the right reasons.
The Aboriginal singer-songwriter from north of Tamworth was not only a Toyota Star Maker Grand Finalist, making the top 10 in the prestigious competition, but also won her first Tamworth Songwriters Association Award for Anzac Song of the Year with Brothers In Arms.
“The song came from my old grandfather,” she said.
“Tony Burton was in World War II and I was thinking about him and all the others who have served, because my little brother was in the army for five years as well, and my mum and dad were both in the RAAF.
“It is a tribute to them and to all our diggers and the women who went over and to those who never came home.”
Lizzie said she was grateful that the lyrics resonated with the judges who had heard the song.
“Everyone has known someone who has gone to war and those words ‘running with guns from the enemy, all in the name of peace’ is me wondering what is the point of war, and I think that’s what people liked about it,” she said.
The talented singer-songwriter said this was an award for her whole family.
Lizzie released Here We Go Again, her debut single and film clip earlier this year and has a busy 2019 ahead.
