“It’s a less flashy version of the band, with the duo allowing the melodies and lyrics to do the talking.” – Life Without Andy
“an uplifting yet melancholic driving cut of indie garage rock goodness” – Pilerats
“A happy and dreamy bop, it’s a bit of a different sound to what Polish Club usually releases, marking their entrance into their independent era. The relentless energy of the duo is still palpable, though, with synth and guitars overlapping in excitement.” – The Music

Polish Club recently announced their fourth studio album Heavy Weight Heart will be released independently on Friday 13 September. In tandem, the Eora/Sydney duo drop new single ‘How Dare You Fall In Love In This City’ and reveal details for their album tour in October, making stops in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Tickets are on sale NOW here.
‘How Dare You Fall In Love In This City’ (HDYFILITC) came together incredibly quickly with Novak writing the lyrics in just 5 minutes, laying down the vocal in one go and making up the melody as he went. Written alongside Robby De Sa (who also worked with the band on previous two tracks ‘Manila’ and ‘Heavyweight’), ‘HDYFILITC’ is “easily the most organic, effortless lyric Polish Club have had,” says Novak.
With nods to Bruce Springsteen, Sharon Van Etten and The War On Drugs, ‘HDYFILITC’ is one big vocal crescendo, where the rest of the instruments are steady throughout. “This was the track from the album that stressed us out most in the studio, as we really didn’t want to lose the energy we found in the demo,” says Novak. “We also wanted to flesh out the instrumentation with more analog instruments. We spent more time than perhaps we ever have chasing synth sounds and guitar tones.”
Conceptually, ‘HDYFILITC’ can be viewed as a companion track to ‘Manila’, the first song released from Heavy Weight Heart, in April this year. “It’s a song about Eora/Sydney, with both songs exploring the notion of not being sure whether or not you’re happy in said place (Manila or Sydney),” adds Novak.
With release set for 13 September, the entirety of Heavy Weight Heart was recorded at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville across a couple of weeks in September 2023 – serendipitously, almost a year to the day of its release. Simon Berckelman, Golden Retriever Studios owner, recorded the album alongside assistant engineer Yianni Adams, with writing credits to Robby De Sa (MAY-A, Vera Blue, Gretta Ray, Grent Perez) on ‘Manila’, ‘Heavyweight’, ‘How Dare Your Fall In Love In This City’ and ‘I Belong To You’, and Budo Miller for Fool On The Weekend’.
A great deal of Heavy Weight Heart’s lyrical content and vibe was informed by Novak’s heart surgery (which at the time was upcoming). After suffering a congenital heart disease for a couple of years, Novak underwent a successful procedure in January 2024. Many of the songs on the album imbue a dreamy, love-infused romanticism – with both Novak and John-Henry Pajak’s recent nuptials illuminating these tracks.
While the undertones and subject matter for the songs on the album are heartfelt and poetic, the sound doesn’t depart completely from their brash rock n roll backbone. “We thought this was going to be our last big label record, so we wrote a bunch of big stadium rock songs intended for a full band vibe,” explains Novak. The album strikes a perfect balance between hard and soft, sincerity and boldness.
Heavy Weight Heart is available to pre-order on vinyl via Impressed Recordings. There will be a strictly limited 300 copies pressed on an exclusive blue and white splatter which come with an individually-numbered obi strip. There’s also exclusive fan bundles available including an exclusive t-shirt design and a special 7” of two tracks (‘Repeating Repeating’/’Heavyweight’) from the album recorded live at their recent show in Castlemaine (in conjunction with Maison Baked). The 7” is limited to 200 and pressed on blue vinyl. The album and bundles are available to pre-order now.
Having recently parted ways with both their management and record label, Heavy Weight Heart will be the first proudly independent album release for Polish Club. With three singles under their belt already in 2024, an album and tour announced and a fresh accolade to add to their pool room, taking home the Most Played Rock Work APRA Award for ‘Good Time’, 2024 is set to be a career defining year for Polish Club.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
