1000Mods do stoner metal in a way almost nobody else does. They strip away all the usual trademarks- the imagery, the garb, the iconography, and they just play. But when they do, they play loud and heavy as fuck. Their sound owes most of its genesis to the Joshua Tree, desert rock end of the stoner spectrum with plenty of psychedelica blended between the riffage and some melodic lilt weaving its way through the distortion.

After playing enormous venues throughout Europe to crowds roughly the sizer of Canberra’s population, they’re working their way through their first Australian tour, tearing up the Basement’s stage with an extremely threatening support bill.

Opening the show for the ‘Mods is local two-piece Lucifungus. If you’re inclined to the view that its difficult to produce a truly full sound with only a guitarist and drummer, this band is likely to make you rethink that sentiment. The sheer density of the sound this duo produce is crushing. Every track is intensely smothering. It confronts every sense in a way that seems inescapable. In a violently distorted tribute to old school European funeral doom, Lucifungus’ music is a lurching, grinding behemoth; unrelenting and unforgiving. Fucking pure.

Following on from Lucifungus is the band I have repeatedly described as the best metal band in the country. For anyone who missed that statement, Witchskull is the most accomplished metal band in the country, light years ahead of the stuff almost anybody else is making. After signing to Lee Dorian’s Rise Above Records, the Canberra based trio released the follow up to Vast Electric Dark, 2018’s Coven’s Will. Their set at the Basement is as incendiary as ever with vocalist and guitarist Marcus De Pasquale particularly connecting with the ethereal and channelling the doom deities.

Without announcement 1000Mods appear and begin to play their supergroove driven spacescapes. There is more light in the sound they produce than most of their contemporaries, which is what sets them apart. They somehow manage to make music that is both really fucking heavy whilst at the same time allowing space for the sound to build and layer. They play a good length set for about an hour and a half and whilst their interaction with the audience is minimal, they still manage to build a solid connection. 1000Mods have been around for around 13 years but are only now really beginning to garner the recognition they deserve internationally. This implications of this are that the opportunities to see them play in venues the size of the Basement are likely to be limited from this point on. Find a way to get a ticket for this tour, its going to be one of the highlights of the year. As a live act they aren’t just tight, they’re a fucking machine.
