It has been 2 years since the Apia Good Times Tour played in Brisbane. The venue was once again the beautiful Concert Hall at QPAC. This tour just gets better and better each year.
The mixed audience young, old and in between enjoyed pre-show drinks, and lined up to buy merchandise. As doors opened, and patrons took their seats, they all looked excited at the evening ahead, and for good reason. What an amazing lineup of Music legends that were about to hit the stage.
The house lights dimmed, and the band took to the stage. Out walked John Paul Young to the loud cheer of the audience, and he started the night with the Easybeats classic “Friday On My Mind”. It didn’t take long for the crowd to warm up.
After his performance, he introduced the next act, multi Aria Award winner Wendy Matthews who looked as beautiful as ever. She wasted no time and proceeded to belt out, with her traditional beautiful vocals, “Woman’s Gotta Have It” followed by her classic “I Don’t Want To Be With Nobody But You”. She greeted the crowd saying to choose carefully and hug the person next to you. Lucky for me the gentleman sitting next to me didn’t follow Wendy’s instructions.
Then a very cool looking couple strutted out onto the stage. They were none other than the magical Deborah Conway, accompanied by Mr Willy Zygier. What a great partnership they have formed. We were treated to her powerful voice as she got the crowd going with Do Re Mi’s classic “Man Overboard”. She asked the crowd to sing the chorus, but was not happy with the result, and stated “Come on Brisbane Adelaide did way better than that, and they were all wearing masks, so I will give you another chance” which had her happy at the second attempt. She followed on with “Release Me ” as her next song.

The next legend performer was Kate Ceberano who looked so gorgeous in red, saying she was honoured to be on stage with her idols. Her classic hit “Brave” started her set, and with the crowd clapping, she pulled out a fan, saying “It’s hot!” “Bedroom Eyes” was next, and Kate exclaimed that although the song was 40 years old, it still sounded as good as when it was released way back then, if not better.
Next, British rock royalty, who now calls Australia home, Mr Leo Sayer made his way to the stage to a thunderous applause of the crowd to start out with a mellow version of his classic “When I Need You”.
Joe Camilleri was up next and he asked for the house lights, after which he said “What a delicious looking audience”. He asked the crowd if they wanted to hear a new or old song. Everyone yelled out new, and he said “you’re supposed to say old”. “Harley & Rose” was his song of choice which had the crowd singing along. He broke a guitar string, handed the guitar over to his tech, then proceeded to play air guitar.
Powerful Soul sisters Vika & Linda were next to perform. “When Will You Fall ” was first up, followed by “Never Let Me Go”. Wow, those beautiful harmonies. They work so well together.
The final act of the first set, a true aussie music icon, was Brian Cadd who sung “Ginger Man” which brought the first set to an end.

Wendy Matthews got the second set underway with “The Day You Went Away”, and she was followed by Vika & Linda with “Feeling Good”, then Leo Sayer followed with “Long Tall Glasses” and Brian Cadd with the mellow “Let Go”. Deborah Conway continued this parade of stars with “It’s Only The Beginning” and it felt like the crowd were really warmed up. What a great time for John Paul Young to belt out “Yesterday’s Hero”.
The fantastic Kate Ceberano partnered Joe Camilleri on saxophone for her hit song “Pash”. Then Joe Camilleri wasted no time with his hit “The Shape I’m In”. As Leo Sayer started playing his classic song “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”, some fans could not resist getting up and dancing in the aisles. All the performs returned to the stage to belt out “Chained To The Wheel”.
This extravaganza of stars and hit tunes continued with Brian Cadd & John Paul Young taking on the vocals of Glenn Shorrock in a beautiful version of “A Little Ray Of Sunshine”. This fabulous night was coming to an end with everyone on stage joining John Paul Young with the smash hit “Love Is In The Air”.
The night was not over, as an encore of Jimmy Barnes & INXS “Good Times” brought yet another highly successful Apia Good Times Tour to an end, one wonders what Apia All Stars 2022 has in store for us.
