What was the first meaningful experience you can remember of a David Bowie track or video?
JASON SINGH: Let’s Dance was my definitely my first connection with Bowie – both the song and video as it was filmed in Australia. Unlike the other guys though, who are Bowie fans from way back I didn’t fully appreciate how much of a genius Bowie was when we first started this project at the end of 2018. I now very much consider myself part of a new generation of Bowie fans.
MICK PEALING: My first meaningful experience of a Bowie track was Space Oddity, there was nothing else like it at the time and I didn’t know if I loved it or hated it, of course the former proved to be true later on.
RUSTY: The first time I saw the Starman on Television, my eyes and ears lit up like the glow of the Belisha Beacon, I was a kid thinking who is this extra-terrestrial being with the most amazing sounds emanating from his mouth.
TIM WATSON: I remember being 9 years old and seeing Ashes To Ashes on Countdown. Mind = blown. The song and super tripped out video were alien and I was mesmerised.

What song of his do you love performing most? Which do you like listening to most?
JASON SINGH: Let’s Dance is my favourite;  I even recorded a cover of it on my album VALE. Since we have been doing these shows my new favourite is Suffragette City – love performing it and it just makes you want to get up and dance.
MICK PEALING: I have only performed 4 of his songs, maybe “Jean Genie” is my favourite. My favourite to listen to is “Oh You Pretty Things”
RUSTY: Starman is my fav, they way it moves thru chords in the chorus with a topping of the most astonishing melody … As for listing it changes from day to day … it would be either Young Americans or Blackstar.
TIM WATSON: Tough call. I love singing Changes and maybe Golden Years at this moment.

How does that distinct “Bowie” character morph itself into your performance of his work?
JASON SINGH: I’ve always thought David Bowie was a chameleon; forever changing and shaping his artistry.
Getting to know his music throughout this show has demonstrated that the variety and depth of Bowie’s music requires a line-up of artists in their own right to ensure justice is done. The focus is on celebrating and paying homage to the music of Bowie with our own touch, not copying.
MICK PEALING: I’m an interpreter not a copier so I may be doing an artists song but it still will sound like Mick Pealing. Bowie is a great songwriter and perfect for loads of interpretation.
RUSTY: I could never morph into Bowie … he had so many characters attached to his being … Tho I do try to be faithful to the sounds.
TIM WATSON: For me it’s a reminder of how expressive an artist can be. I try to keep a little magic inside during the show.

Let’s face it, all you guys are legends of the music industry. You may not like me saying that but it would be a common belief in my view. How does that “experience” come together for this performance of Bowie’s iconic music? And what do you personally love about collaborating / are looking forward to with this group of musos?
JASON SINGH: The opportunity to share the stage with the variety of artists and the experiences each of us brings is really exciting. I love how much fun we have coming together to for these shows and, I think, it really comes through in our performances.
TIM WATSON: Working with extremely different but talented artists raises the bar of the whole experience.
No-one wants to disrespect the others by bringing less than their best.
I love working with great musicians. That small difference between everybody’s style creates something better than any one person could envision.
MICK PEALING: I am looking forward to working with this band, a couple of the guys not for the first time but mostly there is nothing more stimulating than uncharted territory.

Finally, do you have anything special lined up for either or both of these performances? Something the fans can get excited thinking about?
JASON SINGH: Always…we’ve added a few new songs and we’ve got STARS Mick Pealing joining us this year. The audience can get excited thinking about what a rockin show it’s going to be!
MICK PEALING: Yes, unbridled enthusiasm for performing great music with a hot rockin’ band!
RUSTY: Well just the fact we get to play some of the greatest rock songs of our time with friends excites me, I hope the audience gets that from us and takes the journey with us.
TIM WATSON: This will be the first time I’m singing ‘Man Who Sold The World’. Surprisingly I’d not listened to this song until about 5 years ago and now it’s a fave.

BOWIE: GOLDEN YEARS

Following SOLD OUT shows in 2019, including its debut show at the Corner Hotel, it is only fitting that BOWIE: GOLDEN YEARS become an annual celebration paying homage to the epic career spanning music of rock and roll legend, DAVID BOWIE.

The variety and depth of David Bowie’s music requires an epic line-up of artists in their own right to ensure justice is done; Bringing the show back in 2020 is the line-up that blew audiences away in 2019: BOOM CRASH OPERA’S DALE RYDER* TAXIRIDE’s JASON SINGH & TIM WATSON and ELECTRIC MARY’s RUSTY BROWN.

Also joining the line-up for 2020 is MICK PEALING, of iconic 1970s Australian Country Rock Band STARS.

With only two shows planned for 2020, BOWIE: GOLDEN YEARS will pay tribute to David Bowie on his birthday, 8 JANUARY at the OCEAN GROVE HOTEL and on the anniversary of his passing, 10 JANUARY, at the CORNER HOTEL.

Backed by a incredible band comprising some of Australia’s premier musicians, including BABY ANIMALS DAVE LESLIE on guitar and TAXIRIDE’s SEAN McLEOD on drums, BOWIE: GOLDEN YEARS will celebrate the breadth of BOWIE’s musical styles from Rebel Rebel, Jean Genie and Space Oddity to Heroes, All The Young Dudes, Modern Love, China Girl, and Where Are We Now.
