Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer continue their big year with the release of their fourth track Lie To Me off their third studio album Youngblood. The boys have recreated the track with a twist by joining forces with American singer/songwriter Julia Michaels. 5SOS rose to worldwide prominence with the release of their track She Looks So Perfect in 2014, immediately becoming their first number one single. Since then, the boys have released three successful studio albums featuring hit tracks such as She’s Kinda Hot and Want You Back. Julia Michaels on the other hand kept herself behind the scenes writing the biggest pop songs for artists such as Selena Gomez and Britney Spears before releasing her debut single Issues in 2017 which led her to a Grammy nomination.

The instrumental of the track opens with the strums of a bass guitar before any vocals are heard. The bass guitar stays repetitive and constant throughout the entire song which gives the track its own particular vibe. As we get closer to the chorus, we start to hear background vocals as well as finger snaps that pick up a new tempo for the track. The chorus then introduces a drum kit and gives the lyrical content a bit more support in its message. The rhythm of Lie To Me draws similarities with Shawn Mendes’ hit song Treat You Better as the structure and boldness of the instrumental are both powerful components in making the track give listeners its contented feeling automatically. Lie To Me is a subtle, yet powerful sound that works perfectly with its lyrics.

The lyrics of this track touch on themes of love and heartbreak. 5SOS begin the track by singing about seeing their ex lover for the first time. They are then flooded with memories of how they thought their relationship was so right but now they wish it never happened as it’s become too difficult to forget it. However, they know the love is gone but would want their ex lover to lie that it’s still there. Julia however, reciprocates these feelings and believes they’ve found someone else. She feels the exact same way and would hope that the love between them is still there but she believes it isn’t. This song basically highlights a huge miscommunication from both parties and perfectly demonstrates how everything is not what it may appear to be.

This duet works magically as both 5SOS and Julia have their own individual, sultry type of vocals and they blend together like heaven. As Lie To Me originally didn’t include vocals from Julia, it’s crazy how the addition of another person can completely change the message and meaning of a track. As the track was completely a one sided view on a relationship, we can now see two different sides of the story. With the incredible talent provided from both parties, it’s the duet we thought we all didn’t need and that’s what I love about collaborations. Both 5SOS and Julia always provide vocals that really make you feel every word their singing and that’s what makes this track an ultimate winner. Give it a listen down below; all you’ll regret is playing it over and over 100 times.
