They say good things come in small packages and this was definitely the case for Alison Wonderland’s concert and the Enmore Theatre! Having seen the Australian EDM DJ perform at Yours & Owls Festival earlier this year, I knew I was gonna have a good time but I didn’t expect the visual and musical spectacular I was about to be a part of that night.

As her logo was “burned” into the screens behind her DJ table the screams of her fans around me were deafening. The hum of a song started playing as she appeared onstage, performing her first song of the night and the title of her tour: ‘Awake’. I was leaning on the barrier watching the kids in front of me go absolutely nuts over hearing Alison Wonderland play a song they recognise. People were screaming, jumping, dancing, getting on each other’s shoulders and genuinely having a good time. I recognised this ‘Awake’ from her set at Good Things and my boyfriend’s Spotify playlist so I was singing along to the song’s chorus.

As her set continued, Alison (real name Alexandra) played primarily songs from her ‘Awake’ album such as ‘Good Enough’, ‘Okay’, and ‘Easy.’ The drops in every single song were so addicting and once you hear one you can’t get enough, you find yourself craving for your next hit, just like a drug. Alison Wonderland’s songs were enhanced by either live vocals or live electronic cello (from what I could see, I was pretty far) and I couldn’t get over how much talent fit in this tiny 5’2″ Aussie musician.

She remixed popular songs like Ariana Grande’s “God is a Woman,” Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” and incorporating an ICONIC scene from the 2004 film ‘White Chicks’ where Terry Crews is dancing in a club and whistling to the beat of Fisher’s “Losing It.” I remember ‘Losing It’ being played at Yours & Owls so I was super keen on watching it/listening to it again and it did not disappoint.

To wrap up the show, Alexandra explained how she tried to get Ed Sheeran’s blessing to remix his chart topping song ‘Shape of You’ by tweeting to him, yet she got no reply. So, when life gives you lemons, you cover the song with your own vocals and remix the hell out of it so it sounds like a new and improved version of the song. The crowd went absolutely wild and it was definitely a confirmation that this show would go out with a bang.

Even though EDM isn’t the typical genre I’d reach for, Alison Wonderland makes me see it in a whole new, blinding light. If you ever have the chance to see her perform live, definitely do so! Oh, and bring a pair of sunnies with you!
