EVERYONE’S TALKING!
Album Review(18th October 2025)
Review by Paige Clifford
“The new album ‘Everyone’s Talking!’ is All Time Low continuing to combine their pop-punk roots with anthemic modern rock songwriting.” – Scenestr
“All Time Low have delivered a gem of an album with parts of life lyrically examined in forensic detail.” – No Barriers
“…it feels like ATL are still so fresh, having the rare and uncanny ability to captivate my attention from start to finish, and still have lyrics on repeat in my head for days on end.” – Inner Strength Check
I went through my emo phase and dyed my hair blue in high school, so unsurprisingly I’m somewhat of a seasoned listener of All Time Low. The evergreen band released their tenth studio album Everyone’s Talking! yesterday, October 17th, which I was stoked to listen to.
The band formed back in 2003 and still contains its founding members: Alex Gaskarth on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jack Barakat on lead guitar and backing vocals, Zack Merrick on bass and backing vocals, and Rian Dawson on drums.
Everyone’s Talking! runs you through an entire emotional gamut, ultimately delivering an album with the breadth and depth to be listened to on almost any occasion.
The first track serves as a brilliant ‘[cold open]’ to the album. The lyrics are amusing, reflective, self-aware, and raw, fusing a range of grand feelings together in such a short amount of time. The instrumentation is quite unlike the rest of the album that follows, with the acoustic guitar creating a nostalgic vibe. Synths, piano, and vocal harmonies are layered together to build the piece almost to climax, before cutting off just as we’re ready for more.
Relatable title track ‘Everyone’s Talking’ is an anthem of self-doubt and reminiscence, wrapped up in a pop-punk beat. Contrasting from the opener, the piece features bright, squealing electric guitar and energetic drums, paired with Gaskarth’s clear vocals. The stand-out lyric “This is not how I thought thirty-five would go” will gel with all the thirty-somethings. Whether a reflection on their career and the state of the music industry, or about the universal experience of feeling out of place, All Time Low conveys their insecurity and angst effectively whilst also making you want to dance and scream it out.
With a punchy start, ‘SUCKERPUNCH’ lives up to its name. The verses are quite empty except for the snare drum emphasising the backbeat and a witty guitar hook, but it purposefully allows the fuller chorus to shine. Our first love song of many, we’re introduced to a seemingly toxic relationship, with the killer lyric, “You’ll love it how I’m bleeding out for you”. The desperation growls at you from the vocal tones of the last chorus. Three tracks in and they’re already very different from each other, but still cohesive overall.
A staple of the All Time Low song is the stripped back bridge and the sudden build up for a smashing last chorus – it’s a kind of signature. On ‘Oh No!’ it is no different. It’s effective on most occasions including this piece, but I find myself longing for more variation at times across the album. I particularly enjoy Gaskarth pushing his voice into a high register in the chorus, almost to its breaking point, and Dawson’s inventive fills. The band contemplates imposter syndrome and life’s journey in a way that’s digestible and cathartic.
Track five ‘The Weather’ really feels like a narrative, going back and forth between the past love story unfolding in the verse, and the awkward run-ins with them after the break-up in the chorus. I hate to sound like a broken record, but all the tracks so far are very easy to relate to and be immersed in. In Barakat’s guitar solo and the accompaniment, I’m reminded of an eighties style.
‘Falling For Strangers’ cements Everyone’s Talking! as a breakup album. With it’s yearning vocals and echoing drums, this piece is my favourite so far. The bridge is very strong, and the backing vocals bring it all together beautifully. This song has me wanting to get a boyfriend just so I can break up with him and scream the lyrics, “I’m falling for strangers who look like you”!
Synth chords and a simple backbeat underscores Gaskarth’s consistent vocals in track seven, ‘Viva Las Vagus Nerve’. The instrumentation is unadorned and does the job, and I enjoy the harmonic progression in the pre-chorus. However, lyrically I feel like it didn’t quite keep pace with the awesome title.
The difference I was waiting for comes in the form of ‘Sugar (feat. JoJo)’, a very well-placed feature. The melody has an interesting rhythm and emphasis that I find myself moving my shoulders to as I listen. JoJo is a perfect addition, with her voice blending beautifully with Gaskarth’s, especially in the bridge. Her adlibs are spot on, though I find her powerful voice is slightly underutilised. Both her and Gaskarth’s voices can go bigger, but maybe this will come in the live version – fingers crossed.
Track nine, ‘Goodnight, C’est La Vie’ is another short one, coming in at only one minute long. Acoustic strings strum lightly, striking a bleak contrast with lyrics, “So Daddy shot him in the streets / He died at seventeen”. Warning: this might not be first date listening material, unless you really want to get into politics straight up.
Now, I don’t wish to offend the Hustlers, but ‘Bubblegum’ sounds like a One Direction song, but in the best possible way. The emphasis of the beats in the chorus, the layering of vocals, and arpeggio-like movement of the electric guitar create a very nostalgic, boyband-from-the-2010s vibe. And the “La-da-da-da-da”’s? Come on, this must be intentional.
Bringing us back to the pop-punk genre, ‘Little Bit’ is a grungy commentary on materialism, with lyrics like “I always want a little bit more” and “So make me pretty, make me pretty / Give me all the plastic surgery”.
In the following track, ‘Cigarettes & Sabotage’, there are substantial changes in what the instruments are doing between sections which keeps it interesting. I love the guitar riffs after vocal phrases in the verse and the vocal inflection on the lyrics: “there goes my heart on my sleeve” and “sabotage”.
Track thirteen and fourteen are slower pieces, almost ballads, that allow the vocals to shine. ‘Tread Water (feat Ruston Kelly)’ brings a country twang and vulnerable lyrics, while ‘Different Languages’ features one of the best lyrics of the album: “Love’s what you choose to forgive”.
To close out the album, All Time Low gifts us with a quintessential pop-punk piece. The narrative of the album is quite cyclic, with the lyrics of ‘Butterflies’ giving us permission to move on and move forward from what we’ve been through together across forty-one minutes of majesty.
