How would you describe your journey in the music industry so far, and where do you want to go from here with your music?

It would take a real sit down to describe the nuances of my experience in the industry, but what matters most to me is the core of what I do, which is writing passionate songs that I believe in and sharing them with the world. Where do I want to go? I’d like to keep doing that, and sell out stadiums while doing so. :)

.

When did you know you wanted to make music, and perform as your career?

I used to only write songs. I thought I had a terrible voice and that I could never be a performer. I was bullied in elementary school, and always considered myself unable to be on stage. My friends (including my older brother Jack) really pushed me towards releasing my songs, and that catapulted my career, so I owe them that. I remember putting my first song out on Myspace, and consider that the moment that I thought “hey, I could really do this.”

.

Who have been your musical influences or artists you have admired growing up?

Having only an acoustic guitar and electric piano growing up, I really coveted singer songwriters. I was so infatuated with “big” sounding music, but never thought I’d be able to recreate that magic due to resources, so I really took to the simplicity and authenticity of artists like Neil Young, Ray La Montagne, Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley etc…

.

Are there any artists or musicians that you have been so impacted by that it changed your view on life or mentality toward music?

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. I never knew music could be so explorative and universal at the same time. That album really set the bar for me.

.

How would you describe your sound, and why is it unique from other artist’s sound?

I think of each artist as an individual first, and I think the only way that uniqueness is worthwhile is if it’s authentic. I believe that to draw inspiration from one’s life, pull from your specific pool of references and create something passionate and truthful is so exciting, and that’s how I see it.

.

.

What are your goals for 2018 with your music career after winning at The Golden Guitars?

World domination.

.

You’ve played at some pretty massive events the last year, what performance was the most surreal for you and why?

After all the big events and the spectacle of those kinds of things, my most exciting moments are sometimes hidden. I played a small show in a small town in Alberta Canada with my band. We were on a headline tour – the first ever – and we were all pretty exhausted from several shows in a row. We go to this town and expected the worst (having heavy hearts from so much travel). But this town pulled through, and everyone came out to the show, and people had signs and were handing us drinks from the crowd, and it was magical. I’ll never forget that show. :)

.

If you weren’t working in the music industry, what else do you think you would be doing with your life right now?

Painting.

.

What’s one song fans might be surprised you really like?

Rock DJ by Robbie Williams.

.

Lastly, just for fun – if you had to listen to one song on repeat the rest of your life what song and why?

Get Up Stand Up by Bob Marley. Reggae makes me feel good, and if I had to listen to one song on repeat for the rest of my life I can tell you right now, happy I will not be.
