How would you describe your journey in the music industry so far, and where do you want to go from here with your music?

It’s been fun. I’ve played in a bunch of different bands from a whole range of genres. Now I really just want to focus on making and playing the music that I’m actually listening to myself. I’d love to be able to keep making records and be able to put heaps of time and energy into making them as perfect to my ears as possible.

.

When did you know you wanted to make music, and perform as your career?

I remember sitting on the floor of our Fitzroy house playing this little red keyboard thing when I was three years old, while my mum and godmother sat at the table. Then they asked if I wanted to start getting lessons. Must have sounded so heinous that they couldn’t bare to not get me trained up. When I said “OK” – that was when I made the decision to play. I’ve never seen music as a revenue stream or a career. It’s always been something that you just do, something that’s always there. My mum is a musician and has worked a 9-5 her whole life. Music is something you do for yourself.

.

Who have been your musical influences or artists you have admired growing up?

A real lot. I consume music ravenously. Curtis Mayfield, Isley Brothers, NWA, Bad Brains, Jaco Pastorius, Zappa, Jamaican music, House of Love, The Smiths, Bowie and The Jam have been some of the big turning points though.

.

Are there any artists or musicians that you have been so impacted by that it changed your view on life or mentality toward music?

My mentality towards playing music is pretty fluid. Studying Jazz was probably the biggest eyeopener coming from a Punk and Reggae background. There’s more than one way to skin a cat though.

.

How do you feel your sound has developed over your time releasing music?

Because I’ve spent my time playing across a bunch of different genres I’ve always changed my sound to whatever the song is asking for or will benefit from. When I was playing folk or reggae I’d probably steer away from the Big Muffs and 16th notes.

.

What performance in your career so far has been the most memorable, or surreal and why?

Press Club played a mental show at New Years on The Hill 2017 – 2018. Really great crowd, perfect weather, good sound and it was NYE!

Have you ever performed in Australia, do you plan to tour here in 2018?

I’ve played one or two gigs there.. Haha. Looking forward to doing a 30+ run of shows with The Smith Street Band starting in March ’18.

.

What is the music community like where you are from?

My community is the music community (or one of the 100’s within Melbourne). All of our mates are musicians, sound engineers, work at music venues or have something to do with music. Like I said up thur ^, music has always been omnipresent – in not only my life – but everyone else I’ve grown up around.

.

If you weren’t working in the music industry, what else do you think you would be doing with your life right now?

Feeding worms on Lygon Street, Carlton?

.

What’s one song fans might be surprised you really like?

Call Your Girlfriend – Robyn. It’s sheer genius.

.

If you could choose only one artist or band to collaborate with the rest of your career who would it be?

Until a few years ago it would have been David Bowie. Now that he’s gone I dunno, everyone is dead.

.

And, if you had to listen to one song on repeat the rest of your life what song and why?

’93 ’Til Infinity – Souls of Mischief. Because I already listen to it at least 10 times a week. Even if I went insane I’d still be relaxed.
