ZENITH

Earth Frequency Music & Arts Festival 2018

.

Zenith

.

Zenith plays genre-blending aural arrays of hypnotic, psychedelic, trance-inducing persuasions. Her track selections direct dancers towards their celestial pinnacle by heeding the Universal Principle that matter is energy vibrating at an imperceptible rate.

Hypnotic. Uplifting. Melodic. Her signature sound present in every mix, Zenith’s sets are diverse and complex covering territories including Techno, Tech-house, Progressive, Progressive Psytrance, Psytrance, Chill Out and Psydub. Audio-scintillation facilitates trance-floor-mation as this is where ephemeral glimmers of our ‘archaic’ sElves exist. By integrating frequencies and motion she reflects and challenges duality, delivering music to inspire listeners’ ascendency.

Host of Doofland live stream on Frequencies TV broadcasting out of Brisbane, Australia, Zenith has entertained for 15+ years. Her musical journey began hosting a weekly dose of Electronic Goodness on 4zZzFM Radio in the 00’s. A selection of pies featuring her fingers as co-creator include festivals such as Earth Frequency, Earthdance, Bohemian Beatfreaks, Dragon Dreaming, and Dragonflight. Holding diverse roles within this multifaceted commUnity, Zenith contributes delectable offerings, cultivating positive intentions & delivering sonic sensations.

This year Zenith returns to perform on the mainstage at Earth Frequency Festival 2018, and she caught up with Brianna Denmeade from Amnplify to have a chat about what to expect from her set, and how she came to fall in love with psytrance, and the hippie/burner community here in Brisbane…

.

How would you describe your journey in the music industry so far, and where do you want to go from here with your music?

Fun, interesting, exciting! Also long and varied! I’ve been involved in many aspects of the industry from broadcast to event management to performance. I feel very fortunate to be involved in such a vibrant and exciting industry. Looking forward to seeing the industry’s evolution in time to come!

I really am enjoying working and playing at the bigger events and really hope to continue this into the future. Hopefully continuing to expand my reach and involvement across the many areas that I’m involved in.

I feel really blessed to be involved with the Electronic music community at home and abroad.

.

When did you know you wanted to make music and perform as your career?

Loved music from a young age – messing around with keys and rhythm since I was a little kid. But I guess my time at 4zzzfm really got things rolling. I come from an Audio Engineering background so I was more used to being behind the scenes, and you can still find me there but once I went on air it wasn’t long before I swapped the studio for the stage.

.

What is it about trance music appeals to you, and why?

The ineffable nature of psychedelic trance and techno appealed to me as soon as I heard it… It really differs from a lot of other styles in that it has the ability to key us in to old rituals such as the ancient trance-dance experience – the hypnotic deep driving beats, screaming synths I just love weaving complex sonic stories together and I find that these hypnotic genres really allow you to merge with the Dance and to really become entranced on the dance-floor. I just love moving and being moved by the music!

.

Are there any artists or musicians that you have been so impacted by that it changed your view on life or mentality toward music?

A lot of the seminal techno / Goa trance artists really shifted what I knew to be possible about music. But I have to say that UK act Shpongle who is Simon Posford and Raja Ram really pushed the boundaries for me. Way back around 1998 I discovered their more ambient project and that was it for me, new musical realms opened up for me after stumbling upon the first album “Are You Shpongled?” in a Melbourne record store.

I know you used to be part of the 4zzz radio community here in Brisbane, and even had a show for a few years, what was that like?

My time at Triple Zed was really amazing. I hosted a weekly show for about 10 years in the 2000’s. This really gave me good grounding in many aspects of programming and production and gave me the profile to start performing out more regularly. I loved growing up as part of such a community minded organization – working in a place where everyone subscribed to keep the station on air really fostered a sense that we can “do it ourselves”!

For those who don’t know I’m currently hosting Doofland TV which is a live digital stream broadcasting out of Brisbane every 2nd and 4th Thursday from 8.15AEST. Dishing up some of the tastiest tuna from some of the finest electronic music selecta’s!

.

What can fans expect from your sets at Earth Frequency Festival 2018?

Well, I have two sets – One as part of Elements stage block – techno…

Lil diff for me, peeps are used to hearing progressive psytrance from me – but I do love some tasty techno grooves – you can expect an exciting set filled with a bunch of the freshest tuna as well as some old favourites worked into the mix…

And I also co-program and manage the late night Sanctuary chill stage where I’ll be doing a versus set with visiting International, Witchdokta. This will be a much more laid back set with a few interesting live overlays worked in. Really excited to bring this project to the people!

.

What are your goals for 2018 with your music career?

I’m really looking forward to where this year will lead. There are a few interesting opportunities on the horizon. I played my first overseas shows in 2017 so I’d love to be gigging more regularly… Really though, as long as I’m playing music and growing my skills as an artist then it will be a great year!

.

If you weren’t working in the music industry, what else do you think you would be doing with your life right now?

Well actually I’m currently undertaking a Masters in Education and I’m a registered Early Childhood teacher. So I’d say that I’d be working with our youngest generation in some capacity. I’ve been really fortunate to be involved with kids areas at festivals too, really great to be able to combine both these passions.

What’s one song fans might be surprised you really like?

Karma Chameleon by Boy George. It is the first album I remember asking my parents to buy for me…

.

Do you have one performance that stands out so far as being your favourite, or most memorable?

So many to choose from! Solstice sounds Redux – I followed our international Psysex at a gig that I also managed and co-promoted.

Also opening the Earth stage at Dragon Dreaming in 2015 overlooking lake Burrinjuck – one of the most spectacular festival sites in Oz! And a great team to work with!

.

Lastly, just for fun – If you had to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

That one’s easy! Fruit!
