It’s pretty rare for a Sunday night gig to be completely packed, especially one with a younger audience. There are some exceptions though, and Anne-Marie is clearly one of them.

Best known for her radio-friendly pop tracks like ‘2002’ and ‘Alarm’, Anne-Marie’s fans are mainly young girls. For many of them, Sunday night’s show was their first concert, and their excitement was infectious. The group behind us knew every single word to each song and sung along at the top of their lungs. At points the crowd was louder than Anne-Marie and her band, which was a testament to her popularity. She was also aware of her audience, and made an effort to avoid swearing throughout the set. It was appreciated by the group of mums I ran into in the bathroom after the show, who had been accompanying their pre-teen daughters.

The show was a pretty stock-standard pop set, consisting of all of Anne-Marie’s hits. She opened with ‘Bad Girlfriend’ to a deafening amount of screams. Her stage presence is very strong and well-polished. She danced around the stage, relying on her backing track at some points as she moved away from the mic. There was lots of light-hearted banter, from jokes about the shorts she was wearing underneath her dress to a story about an ex-boyfriend. While she was joined by three band members on stage, they were definitely a backdrop to the main attraction.

There were many tracks that I had forgotten were hers. ‘Do It Right’ and ‘Ciao Adios’ were two that I was pleasantly surprised by. Empowering track ‘Perfect’ saw the biggest singalong of the night which was really nice to see. A highlight was during her collab with Clean Bandit, ‘Rockabye’. Anne-Marie put the call out for an audience member who knew the whole of Sean Paul’s rap in the song. Someone jumped up on stage, and despite a rough start they got through the entire verse pretty successfully. The crowd was stoked, and it looked like even Anne-Marie was a bit impressed.

The show was rounded out by ‘2002’ and ‘FRIENDS’. It was funny to think that a large portion of the crowd wasn’t even born in 2002, yet Anne-Marie was singing about being the same age as they are now. While it might not have been the most groundbreaking show, it was a fun night that ran as expected. It was definitely a concert the young girls will remember for a long time, and one I’d go to again.
