‘Generation’s up in smoke, look like kids but feel like ghosts, just try and try to feel alive’

Anson Seabra’s latest release possesses all of the heart and emotion we have come to expect from him, coated in a glossy pop finish that leaves us needing to keep listening. The production is smooth and expertly mixed throughout, and Seabra’s lyrics are no less poignant or clever this time around. The 9-track EP “Feeling For My Life” dropped on October 15th via Seabra Songs and Virgin Music Australia, and houses a collection of tunes that deserve a place on everyone’s playlist. Though Anson is no stranger to production himself, he has gotten out the big guns to make this project truly special. Dan Richards (who has worked with One Direction, Rachel Platten, Anna Clendening, and Lauren Grey), Sam De Jong, and Jackson Foote all leave their mark on this masterpiece.

The opening track, “We’re Not in Kansas Anymore” (video below), takes us back decades with a classic doo-wop progression and some gorgeous synthesised strings. This record is timeless, and what a way to show it. From there we are brought on a journey of change and new beginnings, guided by a wistful Anson as he aches for his old life. The melodies flow, rolling in and out like morning waves. It’s hard to stay the same when everything around you is so radically different. Seabra’s warm and dreamy vocals cap off this track with charm and grace. Soft but emotionally rich, his smooth tone will pull at your heartstrings and keep you coming back for more.

Anson really brings the magic with “Dominos”. It’s perfect for belting out when you think no one’s around. Acoustic guitar lines have no right being this damn pretty, and his vocals soar above it all. ‘Generation’s up in smoke, look like kids but feel like ghosts, just try and try to feel alive’. The lyrics in this track highlight the struggle of fighting against the weight of our collective apathy, to feel something in a world full of people who drift further apart every day. ‘With each of the 9 tracks, I’m giving listeners a sense of what it’s like to live in the world as a highly sensitive person, of the highs and lows of being a young adult today,’ says Seabra, and these words could not be truer than in this song.

“With each of the 9 tracks, I’m giving listeners a sense of what it’s like to live in the world as a highly sensitive person, of the highs and lows of being a young adult today” Anson Seabra

Anson’s raw and personal delivery makes “u hurt me hurts u” (video below) hurt us. His falsetto shows the listener an entirely new level of vulnerability and pain. The lyrics have a contemplative tone, exploring what it’s like to lose everything no matter how hard you try to hold onto it. Anson’s vocals are understated; he just sings and we listen because it’s so damn good.

Just like the title suggests, “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring” makes it easy to stay in bed with its dark and gloomy atmosphere. With beautiful harmonies in the bridge and an intense vocal performance, Seabra manages to keep the EP sounding fresh and different. ‘I need you here cause I’m a mess’. We’ve all been there, when life is simply too much. The old nursery rhyme is used effectively to conjure a feeling of nostalgia while placing it in a totally different context. This perfect storm of genius definitely earns a spot on any self-respecting sad vibes playlist.

Developing self-esteem is hard. That’s what makes “Love Me” (video below) so painfully relatable. Anson explores his own struggles with the lyrical vulnerability of Sam Fischer and the serene vocals of Ed Sheeran. The soft piano chords create a sense of constant urgency, representing the little voice in your head that never takes a break no matter how much you want it to. The pre-chorus melody will be living rent-free in your head for days; Anson climbing to a high falsetto is beyond catchy. Honestly, one can’t properly sell it through the written word, give it a listen and experience the exultant ride for yourself.

“Magazines” brings with it some of the best lyrics on the record, tinged with a biting sadness that keeps every word in your head. ‘Maybe it’s Maybelline, but it’s probably make-believe… …Cause the dreams that they’re selling to you are paper-thin too’. This song paints the desperate reality of a world manufactured for our amusement and pleasure, with no regard to the stars that get caught in the crossfire. The girl in the song feels like such a real person, such a developed character through the lyrics and Anson’s bittersweet delivery. Her experiences transcend the melody, flowing out into a world where her life is mirrored a thousand times a day.

“Walked Through Hell” (videos below) is a real standout on the EP. If you’ve given someone every last fibre of your being and it wasn’t enough, you can probably relate to this breathtaking ballad. With soaring highs and rich lows, Seabra really lays it all out on the table with this tearjerker. This is definitely Anson’s most impressive vocal performance; his delivery of the chorus practically flies through the speaker. ‘I hope that within every song my fans can find solace and a sense of peace in knowing they are not alone in their struggles’. There is no doubt that Anson has lived every bit of the pain he sings about. If you haven’t already, definitely check out his live performance of this tune on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (video below). You won’t regret it.

“Lucky Charms” (video below) is a collaboration between Seabra and Amy Allen, a powerhouse songwriter who has worked with artists like Halsey, Harry Styles, and Selina Gomez. There are times when self-destructive behaviours become your norm and you can’t stop long enough to save yourself. That’s where this track comes in. The powerful angelic harmonies, coupled with Anson’s emotive performance, take this song to a whole new level. The final chorus pierces the listener right through the chest. ‘Friends say that I’m dramatic, that I’m acting, yeah I’m just looking for attention again’. I may have teared up a little here.

“Feeling For My Life” comes to a close with Seabra’s latest single, “Keep Your Head Up Princess” (video below). Reminiscent of Ed Sheeran’s “Lego House”, this track definitely leaves its mark as the final notes ring out. With such sparse instrumentation, the story of the song hits just right. This final track is intimate, personal, raw, and breathtakingly beautiful. As Anson urges us to hold onto the dreams that sparked our childhood passions, we are left with an optimistic message to end this deep creative work about loss and inner turmoil.

Anson sings with his whole heart and then some. The general lack of pitch correction and auto tune is a breath of fresh air in such a heavily quantised and picture-perfect genre. His raw, emotionally dynamic vocals just don’t need it. Whether you’re dissecting the lyrics, or simply enjoying the smooth and sweet production, “Feeling For My Life” will never fail to be just what you’re looking for.
