Who’s ready for a new light bulb moment?

.

As if this powerhouse pop star couldn’t get any more hype over the last few weeks, Ariana Grande is back again with the anticipated release of promotional track The Light is Coming featuring Nicki Minaj for her fourth studio album Sweetener, released 17 August 2018. Coming hot off Nicki Minaj’s track Bed that dropped last week, The Light is Coming is just another addition to the dynamic duo’s successful catalogue of collaborations. Since her worldwide smash hit Problem in 2014, Ariana has been a force to be reckoned with ever since as her lead single No Tears Left to Cry for her upcoming album is still charting top 10 globally. Nicki on the other hand is also expected to release her fourth studio album Queen in August 2018, with the success of her lead single Chun-Li still charting hot.

The instrumental to this track has got to be one of the most complex combinations I’ve ever come across. The track starts with a man yelling in the background “you wouldn’t let anybody speak but instead!” which is played throughout the entire background of the track repeatedly. The sample is taken from a confrontation between Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Spector and a member of the public at a public meeting in 2009. The sample contributes as a political message to the track about light overcoming darkness. Apart from that unexpected addition, the tracks instrumental uses the obvious touch of Pharrell Williams’ production as influences of techno mixed with synths creates a trippy beat blended perfectly with a speedy drums. The electronic sound effects work particularly well with the monotone of Ariana’s vocals in the chorus.

“Give you a box of chances,

Every time you blow it all”

The lyrics to the track heavily focus on the theme of positivity. Nicki begins the track with a rap that simply sheds a light on the negativity of people and men particularly trying to disrespect and blind side her. Ariana furthers this contention as she uses the verses to sing about an individual who acts as if they are much higher above her. She then continues by singing about the opinions of this person based on personal judgement and no facts, leading to an extensive amount of disrespect and shade. She then makes it very clear through a repetitive chorus that hard times can be conquered as “the light is coming to give back everything the darkness stole”. Although Ariana uses her iconic soft tones throughout the verses, she doesn’t have that usual climax moment in this track that emphasises her vocal ability and range.

I do have to give out a warning that once you listen to the chorus of this track, it is most likely going to stick to your head and become a growing obsession. As Ariana is clearly heading for a new sound and direction with this album, The Light is Coming is the perfect track to give listeners a taste for the future. However, although I can’t get enough of this track, I believe the continuous element of the Senator in the background was only needed in the beginning to get her message across, not throughout the entire track. Although I do miss that classic Ariana riff that wows your ears time and time again, it’s refreshing to see the starlet experiment and play around with new sounds and ideas. Give the music video a watch down below; it will aesthetically please the eyes.
