Womad NZ is shaping up to be one of their best yet with several highly acclaimed international acts, an excellent range of local New Zealand talent and two ground-breaking Australian bands, Hiatus Kaiyote and Hot Potato Band.

Both bands are regulars on the Australian festival scene. To be included in WOMADelaide’s sister festival, across the ditch, is very exciting.

Melbourne’s Future Soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, wow their audiences with a kaleidoscope of sound, drawing influences from Jazz, Soul, Funk, Fusion, Hip Hop and Electronica. The band is fronted by the colourful Nai Palm, who is also a solo artist in her own right. In the last 12 months the band have been selling out shows around the world after releasing their debut, self-produced album ‘Tawk Tomahawk’. They will add a diverse and unique flavour to Womad NZ.

Sydney 10-piece outfit, Hot Potato Band began as roving street performers. Their shows are always full of surprise, anything can happen, but they are guaranteed to put a smile on your face with their energy and fun antics. Described as ‘multi-genre’, they combine world influences such as ska, blues, afro- cuban, pop, reggae and folk into a New Orleans inspired brass band with an Australian edge. They have developed their musicianship and showmanship to the extent that they will leave a lasting impression on Womad festival goers. Hot Potato Band is proud of their all acoustic line up. The absence of electronic instrumentation has set them apart from many other acts and continues to tie them to their roving roots. The band’s energy is released through an combination of catchy tunes and lyrics, infectious dance moves, and audience interaction.

The bands unique sound comes from the absence of a single drum kit, bass guitar and electrified instruments. Three drummers create synchronised grooves on what would be a deconstructed drum kit. The bass lines are covered by an enormous, lung-busting Sousaphone. Two baritone saxophones mimic the part of a rhythm guitar and the bands huge array of horns cover catchy chorus lines and provide a beautiful harmonic cloud for Dylan (the vocalist) to float above. Get set to party with Hot Potato Band at Womad NZ.
