Even as singer-songwriter Bella Maree intones “they don’t really know me” through her latest release, ironically she may be actually be revealing more of her inner personality than she thinks.
The Darwin-based artist has lived and breathed music since a young child. She spent her teenage years in Thailand, and had most notably, caught the eye of producers on TV’s the X Factor and The Voice, where she made it through to get airtime on the national program. Aside from reality shows, she’s also released an EP “Blindfold” and today she pushes herself creatively forward again with “They Don’t Know Me”.

This song features head-bopping electro-pop that embraces a tasty R&B groove. Bella ponders the dynamics of social interactions and the facades we project as a means of acceptance or protection. For Bella the realisation that she often finds herself skimming the surface of real human interaction is portrayed as a bleak feeling, “They don’t know what my childhood was like. They don’t me”. But then she doesn’t really know them either. It’s her dichotomy of wanting to get closer but still holding herself back. Peppered with a ticking rhythm and a soulful guitar that keeps the mood of the song effervescent, “They Don’t Know Me” belies the confronting personal lyrics.
The impressionistic approach to production, where elements punctuate the arrangement only to lightly linger delivers a thoroughly modern tone, reminiscent of the songwriting you might find in the works of Billie Eilish, Vera Blue or Lorde. Women songwriters who write from the heart, delivering hard truths often with a playful melody and ultimately an uplifting lilt. This is the type of track that starts you singing with a heavy heart to only end up having you feel triumphant. As Bella sees it, “we are all icebergs with our deeper stories and experiences hidden underneath the surface” and whilst our differences may initially separate us, yet it is in the end what makes us unique.

LYRICS
I’m just sitting here
Thinking to myself
Thinking about how everyone else
They Don’t know me
I mean, They don’t really know me
I’m just sitting here
Laughing to myself
Laughing about how everyone else
They Don’t know me
I mean, They don’t really know me
They Don’t know
About my circumstances
They Don’t know
What my childhood was like
They Don’t know
They Don’t know me
I mean, they don’t really know me
I’m just standing here
Keeping to myself
Looking around at everyone else
Talking shit, small talk and no common topics
All claiming that they know me
But I mean, They don’t really know me
I’m just standing here
Listening to
Who? Everyone else
While they think they know who they’re talking to
But they got no idea what the heck that I’ve been through
They Don’t know me
I mean, they don’t really no me
They Don’t know
About my circumstances
They Don’t know
What my childhood was like
They Don’t know
They Don’t know me
I mean, you see
They don’t really know me

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
