Billie Eilish has just released Bury A Friend, the first single from her upcoming debut album, and it can only be described as dark brilliance. The 17 year old genre-hopping singer has previously released the delicately beautiful Lovely featuring Khalid, boastful trap track You Should See Me In A Crown, and heart-aching When The Party’s Over which has taken the #8 spot in Triple J’s Hottest 100.

In Bury A Friend, Billie appears to focus more on emotions and experience rather than showcasing her vocal ability. She opts for an almost hushed talking approach which is sure to put you on edge.

The track is haunting in more ways than one. In addition to Billie’s careful and chilling vocals, her lyrics are quite dark as seen with lines like ‘i wanna end me’ ‘honestly i thought i’d be dead by now’, and she skilfully incorporates sounds throughout – noises from the music video remain in the official audio. Some of these include abrupt shrieks, old school alarm clock rings, ear-piercing i-don’t-know-whats, echoes, and inserts of a deep-voiced male sternly saying “Billie” and warning “Be careful” .

For the full experience of the song, the music video is a must-watch. It was well thought out and I can confidently assume Billie played a key role in its direction and production – whether that be the demonic eyes, dark lit hallways, gloved hands grappling at her or syringes quite literally stabbing her in the back.

It has been met with high charting, trending #1 worldwide, digital billboards across the globe and praise from large scale artists.

While it deems a mass success so far, it might not be for everyone. Billie has significantly evolved over the years and navigated various genres. As such, earlier fans or those that enjoyed 2017 releases including the delicate Ocean Eyes and guitar-led groovy Bellyache might be drawn away from the darker feel.

Billie’s album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is out March 29. While we know 2018 songs You Should See Me In A Crown and When The Party’s Over are on the track list, it’s difficult to decipher the overall tone of the album. Considering she’ll be performing at Groovin The Moo this April, we’ll likely hear some new tracks!
