Who’s ready to choose the real bad guy?
.
It wasn’t until I woke up this morning that I realised the world really is a perfect place. I drew this conclusion as my phone greeted me with the news that Billie Eilish released a remix of her worldwide smash hit Bad Guy with pop prodigy Justin Bieber. Now if you’ve been following Billie for years, you would be well aware of her obsession for the Biebs. So if she’s excited, could you even imagine both fandoms trying to contain themselves right now?
Rising to prominence in 2016 with her hit Ocean Eyes, Billie has kept herself busy leading up to the release of her first studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in 2019 which has broken numerous records. Spawning hits like Bad Guy, Bury A Friend and When the Party’s Over, it’s been a constant high for the songstress as her number one album has managed to remain in the top 3 for several months to date. We also can’t forget the fact that Bad Guy was released in March and still remains at number 2 on most charts worldwide.
So why the remix? After listening to it for the first time the structure and instrumental of the track remains exactly the same. There’s not even one small change from the tracks iconic mellow beat that remains consistent from start to finish. However, Billie trades in her second verse and chorus for Justin as he gets his own moment in the remix to shine. As the lyrics of this track have sparked much controversy given Billie is only seventeen, she sings about comparing herself to a man she wants to potentially be in a relationship with. She describes this man with a bad boy image but makes it clear that she’s not frightened of them, rather that they are both quite similar.

“Yeah, I’m a bad guy
Ain’t no holdin’ back guy”

So how does Justin fit into this? The pop star uses his verse to toughen up his image with facts about his appearance and attitude. Once we hit the chorus, he makes it evident that he is that bad guy Billie’s been singing about, however there’s an open invitation to bring their bad personas together. What I love about this remix is that we see a retaliation from the other party that Billie has been singing about, giving the track a new perception. Does this change the meaning or contention of the track? Absolutely not. It’s a two for one special and it’s a playful battle between two potential lovers who are both trying to boast their tough egos that could eventually mesh well together.
This remix has left me fulfilled with the music industry this year. Was this remix expected? No chance. Are fans surprised though? Given Billie’s obsession with the Biebs and their recent meeting face to face, I’d say not really. However, the world is about to explode as this remix will reinvent and might possibly push Bad Guy to the number one spot on the Billboard 100 chart. It’s just one of those tracks that you can’t get over and stop listening too, and this collaboration between two of the worlds biggest stars will undoubtedly add an extensive life shelf to this banger of a track. If you’re ready to bless your ears, give the remix a listen down below.
