The return of live music post pandemic has been rocky to say the least.  As international borders slowly begin to reopen, we finally have some overseas acts touching down on our shores.  They may be from just over the ditch, but NZ brother and sister duo, Broods are a welcome sight at the Triffid in Brisbane tonight.

3 years since Georgia and Caleb Nott were last here, the pair are bringing their recently released album, Space Island to life for their Australian fans.  Lyrically, the album deals heavily with the grief of Georgia’s recent divorce paired perfectly with their signature electro-pop sound.

Before Broods even appear, the stage lighting feels like we’re being transported to somewhere out of this world.  Our journey to Space Island begins with Piece of My Mind and Heartbreak.  Some technical difficulties arise before Distance and Drugs, but Georgia effortlessly brushes them off with some banter “I can already tell this is gonna be fun” she laughs.

Georgia is absolutely magnetic on stage, it’s impossible to look away.  Stepping out in knee high boots, a black skirt and fringe jacket with a white bralette underneath, her monochrome outfit contrasting perfectly with her fiery orange mullet.  It’s no surprise Georgia moves with such confidence when she’s shared stadium stages with the likes of Taylor Swift and Charli XCX.  Even in an intimate venue like the Triffid, she brings that stadium energy.

Old favourites LAF, Free and Bridges have the entire crowd moving with the same energy as Georgia.  Even the most tender moment of the night – when Georgia steps behind the keyboard to deliver a soaring performance of Like A Woman, she breaks away to dance like no one’s watching.

Reflecting on the past 2 years, Georgia shares “There were moments when I thought, is my job over?” but she reminds us “Music is never over”.  The roar from the crowd is a reminder that without the fans, there would be no job.

Moving to the back of the room for the second half of the show, I’m sorry to report a few “gig talkers” seem to have also survived the pandemic, speaking obnoxiously loud over the quieter songs Alien and Gaslight.  The night isn’t dampened by inconsiderate punters for long with Georgia breaking into an epic cover of Robyn’s With Every Heartbeat.  Disappearing mid-song for a costume change, Georgia returns in a floral bodysuit, bounding across the stage for new tracks I Keep and Days are Passing.

Broods take us to every corner of Space Island, covering every song off the album tonight.  They know the fans want the old stuff too, so they give us another medley of older tracks with Sucker, Hospitalised and Everything Goes Wow all making an appearance.  Georgia vocalises what everyone in the crowd is thinking “It is so, so nice to be in a room with live music.”  It’s hard to believe we’ve all survived over 2 years without it.

The encore feels too short with just Peach and Goodbye To The World.  Even though there were a few crowd favourites missing from the set, no one is leaving that room disappointed.  I think we’re all just happy to know that live music is most definitely not over.
